Front to back nothing but perfection imo. It’s weird because my taste is generally more metal/hardcore but I think Pain is Beauty is my favorite of those three. The Waves Have Come is one of the most beautiful musical compositions I’ve ever heard.

i think at its darkest (the opener, Sick, Reins etc), that album is just as oppressively "heavy" as anything else she's done, but hearing her get there with a lighter palette just makes the likes of Carrion Flowers/the Hiss Spun tracks i remember skimming/this (but that's more complicated ig) feel crass to me - not to mention how well that palette blends with the moodier or softer parts of the tracklist, of which Waves is most defs a highlight
or maybe it's just bc PiB was the first i heard of her. hmmmmmmm

Was going to bring up Sick, lyrically that song hits really hard
“And I should be put to death for ever being cruel to you.”
Like goddamn man

I have a big soft spot for Abyss, which was my first, but everything she's made is good
>or maybe it's just bc PiB was the first i heard of her. hmmmmmmm
There's either something to this or something more profound to be said about her range

I think it’s the latter.
Grime and Glow through Birth of Violence there’s so much diversity.
Hell, even Mistake in Parting is good, and she describes it as a “shitty breakup album” iirc

mixing is so muddy on this

see why'd they have to put a cool-ass song like Lord of Liars and Daimon between all these lamer ones

Good choices despite the overall take I guess… not a fan of Tongues then Ledd?

that one's not bad either, revisiting it. just didn't quite pick up the pace and get my attention like those two did on the first listen

Coming back to say Crimson Stone is such a wonderful track, it's grown on me a lot since first listen and now it's probably the song I return to most

Easily my favorite song on here. And I love pretty much every track on this record.

Yeah it's the one song here that I would have loved to see even on a traditional Converge album as a late-album cut in the spirit of Wretched World or Thousands of Miles Between Us. So good, and the interplay between all the vocalists really works well

"At this point I'm kinda resigned to Pain Is Beauty being the only CW release I'll vaguely love, but damn that's a solid album"
You should check her acoustic "Unknown Rooms" album. That's the only album of hers I can fully listen to.

Also really solid, just not as good as her next three records for me.

Should defs peep Unknown Rooms, dunno why I've put it off so long
Apokalypsis is my #2, some absolutely fantastic cuts but I never really fell for it as a whole

Boyfriend and Flatlands are two of her best songs. Unknown Rooms is gold.
|

Yeah Flatlands is crazy good. The cover by Mark Lanegan is just as good imo
