I love the singing but I'd be lying if I said the album couldn't use more moments like the end of Villain

very solid album. kind of disappointed though. outside of the singles and mombassa, just not as memorable as past albums and kind of predictable.

Real bummed that this album hadn't dropped a couple years back when they played bonnaroo ... would have been easier to get my gf to watch some of it.

"i don't even care if this is a 1.1 out of 5, as long as OCHL is a 1.0 out of 5 then all well in the universe"
Late 2 the party but y'all didn't amen this hard enough

Jay, funny how we started at 4.5 but I bumped to a 5 and you dropped to a 4.
It makes sense some of the magic wore off, but it just keeps getting better the deeper I get into the lyrics and how the swell with the music.

i usually disagree with fantano but he has turned me onto some music and i still watch some of his vids
his review of this album was pretty accurate, but i'm such a shoegaze fanboy that i can tolerate such generic and bland shoegaze as deafheaven's take on it. doesn't hold a candle to current bands like outlander tho.

I still think overall Shellstar and Mombasa are my favorite. They sure do know how to open and close albums that’s for damn sure. Mombasa has taken over as their crown jewel, IMO, and I’m sad to have removed it from Pecan Tree. But yeah, this album is a monster and really has grown and grown and grown for me. Within 8 years I could love this just as much as I love Sunbather. Which is funny because New Bermuda and OCHL started off 4-4.5 for me and now they’re like 3’s and 3.5’s. New Bermuda to me seemed coherent and whatnot but it was them fitting themselves into a mold just to please everyone. OCHL was undeniably Deafheaven but it’s inconsistencies and awkward transitions saw them transitioning into something else and it was a nice experiment but such a slog to try to make it through now, but it’s an interesting transitional fossil to reflect back on. This feels like a much more realized Evolution that OCHL tried to be. It’s a callback to so many moments of their prior albums. I still think it sounds more like Sunbather than the others though. It’s like if Sunbather wanted to go full-on Shoegaze. Definitely one of my favorite albums in years.

@Garth I'll probably end up going back to the 4.5 club bro. Just kinda played this out already, literally been jamming it nonstop for the past three days. Briefly checked BTBAM and Wolves, but this has been ruling my playlist
The Gnashing is so fucking good.

Yeah I forced myself away to listen to Colors II. It was pretty good. But I wound right on back here.

Album art game is stong with these gents. Really wish the cover for Black Brick was used for a full length. Sickest artwork ever.

Great album covers. Terrible fonts. Thankfully this one didn’t have the font included on the streaming services. I bought an infinite granite t shirt to wear to the upcoming show. But god I hate that damn font. Imma wear it though.
