the production on this really kills it for me : /

It is a bummer, but even if it had a decent production, the songwriting hardly shines anyway

what did you guys think of the World of Mercy?

It was okay. Still pales next to anything off dss uroboros and arche though. The production is still dogshit as well

that ending is dope af tho. I'm actually probably going to be able to see them in Tokyo when I'm there in April, so I have to play catch up and familiarize myself with the last few years of their work cause I fell off after Arche

World of Mercy was an improvement. I dont hate this album though, just would have been better if they had developed some songs more, like Downfall
|

yeah tbh the initial sput reaction was why I never really dove into this record when it came out

After giving time away from it and revisiting it before the US tour last year, I’m pretty much in agreement w/samwise2000 that the weaker songs could’ve benefited w/more time for development. The great songs are great though and The World of Mercy I liked quite a bit.

I've probably missed out on a lot of good albums because of a single shitty Sput review haha. I hope that negative DSS review didn't turn people away from that album.

I doubt it. DSS has a high average score, and people probably pay more attention to that than the reviews. A bad review of DSS is obviously grossly different from what most people who heard the album thought of it, whereas 3.5 is exactly the site average for this.
If the production on TIW and TWOM was better, I'd rate them about a 3. There are some good moments on the record, but there's much better music out there.

DSS seems to be held in high regard amongst metal fans. Personally, I put Uroboros & Arche ahead of it, but it's still the sandwich between my personal holy trinity of DEG albums.
Marrow's great IMO even w/its production. If it had the production of my holy trinity, maybe I'd give it a 4. TIW is still weaker as far as songwriting and even if the production improved, I'd probably keep it as it stands at a 3 or bump it up only by half a point.

What’s wrong with the production on marrow?

yea i always thought marrow sounded pretty solid production wise

I dunno. I guess for some, the production’s too raw and abrasive but personally, that’s exactly what actually MAKES the album have the impact it has. I don’t see how its production sounds any different or worse than something like Jane Doe (Converge) or Prowler In The Yard (Pig Destroyer).

“the production’s too raw and abrasive”
Surely that’s what they were going for with that record though lol

A relatively gritty production works fine for Marrow, what doesn't work fine is the complete lack of good riffs. I'd even put up with the comical lyrics if they had some good riffs behind them. What I can remember of that album sounded like bargain bin Slipknot. If it had Jane Doe style riffing to match the production it would be a pretty solid record.
@Acme I agree that Uroboros is their best album, though there isn't a huge gap between those 3 so it's easy to see how DSS or Arche would be put first.

Yep, I could’ve worded my original statement much better haha.

@samwise Listening to some of these songs again, Aka and Zetsuenai are definitely the better ones here, especially the former. I may bump this to a 3, with a caveat for the awful production, especially on the drums. 2 considering the production, 3 not considering.
