this kinda pop's been hitting the spot for me lately, and this is growing on me

I have a soft spot for a lot of female-fronted mainstream pop, but as good as recent albums like Emotion, 1989, and Dangerous Woman have been, this is so far ahead of them it's ridiculous. In my humble opinion, it's the first true classic pop record in a while.

It's great that you can enjoy this album so much Sowing! Personally I feel Lorde still has a long way to go, but this was definitely a great magnitude more enjoyable than her debut.

For certain. PH was nice, but the whole speak-singing over glitch beats and finger snaps got old without any sort of variation. This was a huge leap regardless of whether you view it as a jump from awful to acceptable, or in my case acceptable to top tier.

No bad songs on here (though not big on Green Light), but not enough GREAT songs for me.

@Sowing: Yeah, most people (including myself) would agree that this is far better than her debut (which was a 2 for me), the lyricism on that album was some of the worst I've ever heard imo, but she toned that down here and fleshed her style out.
@jtswope: I actually don't mind Green Light tbh, but yeah this is a consistent listen just nothing with that much of a "wow" factor.

Yeah agreed

I'm not entirely sure why but the music video adds so much to Green Light for me. On it's own it's a 3.7/5, with video it's a 4.5.

Oh yeah Green Light's video is aesthetic as fuck.

I love Green Light minus some of those backing vocals that are kinda cringey
Sowing, don't forget to check Amy Shark for mainstream pop in a somewhat similar realm. I know you're not huge on EP's, but you might dig it :]

I can dig an EP if all the tracks are tight. Thanks for rec!

More like a tepid step back. I'll like a "I'm sick of your shit" pop with a more minimalist over this bombast anyday.

But if it becomes minimalist is it still considered pop, and if so to what extent? You can certainly have minimal pop, but I feel like when that happens people automatically label it something else, like indie.

you guys should check 17 hero by Morgan Saint for another great little EP extremely in the vein of Lorde

@Sowing: Regardless of what side people take my point still stands. I can't say I'm enough of an 'expert' to give a nuanced comment on that.

"if all the tracks are tight"
I wouldn't say all the tracks are, but it has several earworms on it

I could never get behind Boucher's vocals though. Art Angels is definitely as decorated a pop album as I've heard in recent years though, for better or worse. I much prefer the artful, key-driven and string-laden approach taken here.
