"I doubt being melodic has a lot to do with being accessible."

im sorry man. but im not going further than that with you lol. uh pop charts? melody, man. From the beatles to Ariana grande, and even hip hop for many singles. MELODY.

Even something like illmatic is filled with hooks, this is giving me Forrest Whittaker eye

Yeah, and Franz Schubert has a better sense of melody than all of them and he isn't very popular, is he?

"which brings me to why i love science fiction so much. it sounds like the sequel to devil and god, in every way."

i dont know if i would have liked Sci Fi as much as i did if i didnt get this album first. i love it when bands take a lot of risks.

Slex, hip-hop is mostly about rhythm, come on. It has some melody, yes, but it is mostly rhythm.

Yo Ave Maria is awesome I'll concede

It's certainly not solely about melody or anything but it's pivotal, like Kendrick Lamar's most popular songs are because of the hooks, not the bars

Anyway, I still don't really know why you guys call this "inaccessible", is it really just that it is abrasive? Because, it's not like it's hard to find melody here, you don't even have to try to find, is there, all over the place.
Yeah, and those hooks have barely any sense of melody, but whatever, that's another discussion.

I don't think this is necessarily inaccessible after having spent so much time with it, it doesn't even really entirely have to do with the sound of the album itself, this album took a chainsaw to every single fan's expectations coming after TDAG

Is that really something "inaccessible"? Like, uh, imagine that during the 1960s The Beatles suddenly made an album that sounded just like The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet, it would sound nothing like them, but it would still be accessible, right? Maybe not popular because that wasn't what people were expecting, but it would be accessible.

The Beatles and Rolling Stones were like, at least adjacent. This is like a screamo/grunge album, Brand New was way more popular than anybody wanted to admit for some reason and there certainly ain't no song here that's gonna be played on MTV

Ok, whataver, if you think the difference is that extreme how about this? The Beatles make something that sounds just like Led Zeppelin I, would you call an album that sounds like that "inaccessible" just because The Beatles? Even if, you know, Led Zeppelin are accessible.
And hey, MTV used to play Dig, you never know.

Okay, i get this, and i agree. In fact, because of daisy, my bar was pretty low in 2017 for the band, not to mention the massive wait added in and the questionable prelease songs like mene, so when science fiction came, it well surpassed the bar. So yeah, this release was definitely a great catalyst to that album's impact for me.

I guess I see what you're saying, maybe I mean, like, palatable instead? Brand New fans weren't listening to anything like this when this came out is all I'm sayin

Yeah, by "accessible" I just mean something that is, well, not "hard" to listen to.

Well, maybe I don't even know what is and isn't accessible at this point, I used to think Deceit was inaccessible but some day I was jamming A New Kind of Water and some girl asked what I was listening to, she listened to it and said it sounded nice, and then there's that one time my mother said that she kinda liked Mayhem's Life Eternal, so... Yeah. Who cares?

honestly thats what i got from that convo. different definitions of accessible itt, which is ok. since i dont know you, i glanced at your ratings to get a feel for your tastes and i saw a shit load of challenging, classical, and experimental stuff which is a stark contrast to my more easy listening tastes so the difference in what we hear here makes a lot of sense, i guess. Doesn't matter but i get where you are coming from.

i think you might have misinterpreted my comment? its not that this set the bar low for me, this is my favorite Brand New. what i meant is i think the reason i was able to like Sci Fi so much for what it is is because i got my experimentation fix with Daisy. if i didnt get Daisy first im sure i still would have liked Sci Fi a lot, but it wouldnt have been what i was hoping for.

or maybe you just meant that it's the same for you, just for a different reason, idk.
