the band has confirmed to me that guitars were used in the making of this album. 💯

Haven't heard this yet but my understanding is it has shoegaze elements, how could it have shoegaze on it without guitars?

that's a leading argument against it.
an argument is that it can't be shoegaze without guitars, however it certainly does "emulate" it.
everything regarding these things fall under "your mileage may vary" tbh.

Ahah Cyg, I see.
Well I guess those who argue against its being shoegaze need a new argument then don't they?

there kinda is (not rly) a developing wave of shoegaze/shoegaze-like bands. ppl refer to it as nu-gaze which this would fall under bc nu-gaze isn't a definitively rock genre. (like neo-psych, which is rooted in rock but can come in any form of music). but it hasn't really ever taken off, not enough reps to even be worth considering tbh (despite being kinda a thing since the early 2000s).

Interesting, I've heard the term nu-gaze before but I always thought it just referred to 2nd generation shoegaze bands. Aside from this band who are some of the other acts associated with the nu-gaze term?

not 2nd gen because slowdive and mbv (which is a 1st gen band) era of shoegaze define the 2nd gen of shoegaze iirc. nu-gaze would have to be 3rd+ gen, but after the first two i don't think it matters all that much imo. just gaze or not gaze.

Huh, I figured shoegaze from the late 80s to mid 90s was the 1st generation with the 2nd generation being stuff from the 2000s to present. I guess there could be a 3rd generation by now for all I know though, I'm still a novice in the genre tbh.

mbv was a band since the early 80s (they made bad post-punk i think). they started making shoegaze by the late 80s around the same time other 1st shoegaze bands started cropping up.

Album is impressive, struggle to find a perfect times to spin it - it isn't relaxing, it isn't full on poppy, it isn't consistently energetic.
Schizophrenic basically. I listened to it three times in a row on a flight once, that seemed to make sense.

I'm still kind of scared to try it due to my unfamiliarity with the genres it mixes

It incorporates glitchy sections/busy drums/abrasive 'loud' electronic textures
I'd say it needs a few tries and see where you are, some of the tracks are quite straightforward so I doubt you'll be put off by the whole thing. It's wilfully scattergun though, jumps around a lot, that could frustrate.

Neo psych / proto gaze (s3, loop), 1st wave (mbv), 2nd wave (90s mbv clones), 3rd wave mid 2000s gaze revival imo

people say the album lasts longer than it needs to and i'm inclined to agree since i think round world fantasy is an amaze song and a perfect closer, but i appreciate the actual closer quite a bit more now these days. dig the soulvaki vibes.
also agreed w/spaceboy
