Seriously. Beacon of stellar songwriting. Wish the band saw merit in returning to a sound like this.

I've only listened to one album by them after this one...

I remember the 2nd being pretty great, though not phenomonal like this. The 3rd was mid with a few standout tracks. Haven't been moved to check out the 4th yet.

I gave up on them quick, tbh, but do remember a few good songs following this. Might do a run of everything Preoccupations soon. Why not?

I think all their albums have merit, I really like their newest one

I should probably queue up the newest soon. Always in the mood for more post-punk.

was viet cong considered offensive or something? and they changed their name two or three times too.

The band frequently faced controversy over their original name, involving accusations of both racism and cultural appropriation because of the name's association with the original Vietnamese Viet Cong.[11] In March 2015, the band was set to perform at Oberlin College, but the show was cancelled due to their "offensive name".[12]
very uh of the time lmao

Their recent album is very mid innit?

i cant find many instances of people finding 'viet cong' offensive or derogatory, especially not amongst scholars. it was literally the word used for/by the NLF in the vietnam war, directly translates to 'vietnamese communist', which they were. so this is basically the only time i've heard someone get "cancelled" for using that term. i'm trying to find more research that suggests this is a slur of some kind but not getting much luck. besides, i thought we all agreed the west were the bad guys and not the NLF? I dont get it.
but sad this band fell off after this. havent heard anything else they've done, but those low ratings make me sad.

Nice bump, haven’t thought about this banger in a while. This really shook things up for a minute back when it came out

I had this rated higher, but when I revisited it recently I found it a tad underwhelming. Cassette is their peak imo (not counting Women ofc). Btw, it’s interesting that they didn’t get harrassed for “Women”, Girl Band changed their name to Gilla Band, even though it was years later.l, in a different zeitgeist I guess.

If people complained about Women that'd be stupid as fuck. I love Women and their name. Girl Band was a better name than Gilla Band. Gilla band sounds like nonsense. Like in what world is that actually offensive?
