I thought so at first too, but the more I listen the more it comes together. This is the darkest album they've done so far.

@Joey you ever taken a look at the review I wrote for this?

And just so we all know, Birth and Death is one of the best tracks they've ever made.
|
| |
It rules but my fave on this is easily Astral Dialogue/Dark Matter Gods (feels like one track they split in two)

If I had to pick just one though it would be Dark Matter Gods

I probably read it awhile ago, but I just reread it. I just find this album lacks that inexplicable charm that previous agalloch releases had
|
| |
I found that initially but, like I tried to explain in the review, I found that the album opened up and revealed it's charm with further listens. There's a lot of emotion to be found both in the vocals and the music itself

I think it gets more formulaic (the mood, not the structure) the more you listen to it. There's emotion but it all sounds contrived and half-hearted.

"I think it gets more formulaic (the mood, not the structure)"
How can a mood be formulaic?

Very, very easily. Like how a song structure can follow a typical formula that one can predict, the atmosphere or mood of a record can wallow in cyclical, easily predicted transitions that repeat over and over again throughout the record. This album so happens to always oscillate between "mysterious" and "evil" moods so frequently and in such a distinct pattern you can know what's coming in terms of atmosphere minutes before it actually happens. With Agalloch's older albums - even Marrow - this is not the case at all.
Basically, in your review for this, you write off people who don't like this record by repeating over and over again the tried and true "listen to it more, you just don't get it yet".

I don't think that anybody in the world will ever be able to analyze music to such a ridiculous degree quite like Crysis. hahaha

Dark matter gods is phenomenal.

Album grew on me a bit, but still quite weak for Agalloch standards.

Not sure how this tries to sound "evil" at all. This band has never been about sounding evil and they definitely didn't start here.

Really man? That's a cheap shot and you know it. I use my experience with the album the justify why I think it takes repeated listens to appreciate. Find me any part where I "write people off", I'll wait.

The opener is the only weak track for me.
Everything else is either solid or rules. It's not that different from Marrow, it's just got more doom influence and got rid of almost all of the black metal influence.

Hmm, maybe this just takes a lot of time to grow on me, will listen more. It is the season for it after all.

You imply it. You imply that you use this "experience" as an argument to say you understand the record better than people who may dislike it. To quote:
It isn’t an album that gives itself away on a first, second or even third listen.
Much like a person, it requires patience, perseverance, and attentiveness in order to decrypt the outer layers and get to what lies within, a daunting task perhaps, but one that can reap immeasurable rewards when done for the right person (or in this case the right band)
Picking out the minute details that make an Agalloch album the beautiful journey it is becomes a challenge that will not appeal to any listener.
Listen after listen, however, the album reveals itself layer by layer
However, in time, the album reveals itself as a deep, powerful, and emotional voyage much like the albums that preceded it.
There are several more times you do this. The crux of your argument (and the entire review in general) of this being good is that people must listen to it a lot and only those who get the album and commit themselves to it will like it. This implies that people who don't like it aren't committed to the album or giving it a fair chance, which is a bit ridiculous.
