I can be generous and call Ktulu a ballad… even still that is such a stupid criticism. Fade to Black really might be their best song ever and Ktulu ain’t no slouch either.



This is old hat but Escape and Trapped Under Ice are easily the weak links and they’re nowhere near ballad territory.



Later on their ballads started to suck but they were solid up through Justice

I am very generous and assert that their ballads were solid for all of the past century. I might be biased towards Until It Sleeps and Unforgiven since I've listened to them all my childhood and the latter was my gateway into metal as a whole, but there's no way I'd say their 90's ballads suck. Hell, I wouldn't even say that the 80's ones are much better, the band was really consistent in this respect.

1 ballad is enough to tame the lightening. There debut was far more relentless throughout even if it sucked compared to RTL.
