I've always been of the opinion that the lyrics on this LP mostly suck, that's why I was talking abou Tool's peak.
Also, @Mythodea even if I understand what you wrote (which is debatable) I don't see how that applies to Tool

@Johnnyofthewell spot-on
@Valkoor952 Stupid arguments and mob mentality surround artists that are not much greater themselves, is the rough idea. And I think Tool - or at least MJK - have been inspired by this pseudointellectualism and ''rational'' idea. I mean, yeah, philosophy and whatnot, but maybe after fifteen years you could write something more than new-age eastern rehash.

"but maybe after fifteen years you could write something more than new-age eastern rehash. "
Yet again, few people would dispute that the lyrics here are dull as shit. But painting Aenima and Lateralus as pseudointellectualism is just an edgy and unsubstantiated claim. His ideas borrow greatly from eastern philosophy and psychoanalysis but he interweaves them in his own pathos quite compellingly and earnestly.

Oh my god we’re actually discussing the album again. I remember a 2019 of James Bond and teenage books discussion that seems so far away now.
WHAT HAVE WE BECOME

I can't read this album title anymore without thinking of it in the same way that Dave Draiman sings "indestructible".

@Valkoor Edgy or not, I genuinely think MJK borrows greatly from the foam of eastern philoyosphy and psychoanalysis, and he doesn't go deeper. It's not his honesty I'm critiquing, he does whatever he wants and I like his work. His lyrical prose is refined, I give you that, and I like some lines he's written, but yeah, that's as far as I can go.

Yeah, but these are rock songs after all. It's not a phd thesis, it's not meant to be some in-depth dissertation. It is supposed to be vague concepts and notions, that go along with the music, that the listener himself interprets and incorporates in his own imagination whichever way he sees fit.
Otherwise, fair enough.

well, if we are going to talk about depth and complexity in art and lyrics, you can't use the argument ''it's rock afterall''. I'm not expecting a phd thesis, but there are many ways to remain vogue and talk about all that, and MJK's way is, imo, a bit... banal.

Agree to disagree.
Songs like Parabol/a, Schism, Pushit, 46&2, Stinkfist, The Grudge and so on, don't personally strike me as banal.
