I'm in my 30's. Of course I care more about the lyrics than the music.

"Once you start earnestly assessing Tool for their lyrics you've gone too far out to sea

Tool is one of the better "metal" bands lyrics content wise

Fair but this is more of a embarrassment for metal than a leg-up for Tool

Most lyrics suck. Let's be real.

Aenima and Lateralus have legitimately insightful and introspective lyrics that deal with valid concepts

I realize that the "tool is too deep for u man, it will go over ur head, im like enlightened bro" meme that was the crux of the tool fanbase some time ago (still is with some people) is cringy as fuck, but that doesn't negate the quality of the lyrics itself

I find lot of pop punk owns its authorial voice in a way that gives it a lot more self-awareness and credibility than this, even if the content is glib af. But then again lyrics are a big part of why I bother with the better end of pop punk, so I guess that figures. Lyrics generally do suck :[

There is nothing authoritarian about it. It's just cringy whining.

Well yes, but when the audience's voice becomes (ironically at first, unironically later on), the voice of the creator, then the cringe is inherited. You look up to some artists and despise the ''other'' fans, when you realize what made the toxic fanbase choose the specific artist in the first place, is similar thinking and the artist not distancing themselves when shit hits the fan.
