I always felt this album belonged to a different decade...now whoever you are you can't deny this belongs to another decade.
Let's move on together people.

'I'm fascinated by how people could rate this as low as 2's and 1's - are yall not hearing this or just trolling? If the latter, then c'mon man, this record deserves an average above a 4. Favorite of the decade for sure.' (2).
Word brother.

"I can understand why people wouldn’t like this, and it’s mainly down to just how damn bloated the songs are if lengthy tracks aren’t your thing.
Being a “progressive” band ultimately means deviating from the norm, and 90% of the norm is 3-6 minute songs of varying genre and structure. A 10+ minute song easily demands more attention, and if not directed towards the right listener it’s going to fly by with little impact. 7empest is 15 minutes and 44 seconds long, that’s longer than some EPs!
Either that, or it’s a perception of it being “big brain time” music, ie: pompous and bigheaded, and “too intelligent for you, you wouldn’t get it”.
That’s just my theory, anyway. Personally anything Tool puts out is exactly what I’m looking for in their releases."
That was a great (and big brain) take, aerisavion.

It's not a great, nor a big brain take - it's a lazy one
The reason why this album isn't as good is not the length of the songs and the perceived lack of attention or sophistication the listener might have, it's that the length does not justify the content in these songs. Tool's best songs are often those that exceed the 8-9 minute mark: Pushit, The Grudge, Lateralus, Third Eye, Rosetta Stoned etc. However each of these songs manages to remain interesting all the way throughout, often building up steadily and beautifully, and climaxing cathartically, never overstaying their welcome more than they have to.
In this here album, nor is the build-up that great (often repetitive, uninspired and too reminiscent of previous material), nor is the climax and the pay-off in these tracks worth it in the end. In fact in some of these tracks there is a notable lack of climax and pathos, they just feel like prolonged jam sessions with no clear-cut artistic direction behind it (there are a small number of exceptions).

I'd like to also argue length of songs NOT being the crux of the issue here when 7tempest is BY FAR the best track and it's also the longest track. It also comes at the tail end of this, when I'm already weary of the album, so it REALLY needed to make an impact at that point in the runtime for it to be memorable.
And basically what Valkoor said too.

While I don't agree with Johnny's rating (I feel he could be more generous and give it a 3 AT LEAST), I do agree that this album is kind of lacking on atmosphere compared to previous albums. 7empest especially as a closing track needed some more atmosphere in it.

come on, I don't think anyone would accuse you of getting big brain stuff lol rekt
No, what you must understand is that I agree with aerisavion, and your argument, though well made, did not sway me.

Ty
@valkoor/symbolic - tbh I can see this point of view too. In my comment I’m mostly referring to the “average music listener” of the world, not so specifically Tool fans.
That being said, there are plenty of reasons this album wouldn’t appeal, you’ve just highlighted another valid one. Tool has been described as a “thinking mans band” in the past, which would indicate a lot of thought goes into what each listener wants from their Tool.

We do notice the relation between rating and IQ. Not that it surprises us, but it's good to see the correlation holds true.
