True that. Did you ever see Coherence? It was a much better movie. The acting alone is godly.

Yeah all the actors and actresses are nobodies in Hollywood, but I read that they were just given a little paragraph per day for their eyes only during filming so reactions from the other people on set would be more natural and improvised.

To be a proper sputnikker, you must see Coherence. It's the most hyped movie here.

And it's completely justified.

I'm fascinated by how people could rate this as low as 2's and 1's - are yall not hearing this or just trolling? If the latter, then c'mon man, this record deserves an average above a 4. Favorite of the decade for sure.

I listened to it in full the other day and can confirm it's not a 1.5

what did you dislike about this record so much? don't mean to sound like a dick but I'm honestly curious how FI could generate such negative opinions

I can understand why people wouldn’t like this, and it’s mainly down to just how damn bloated the songs are if lengthy tracks aren’t your thing.

Being a “progressive” band ultimately means deviating from the norm, and 90% of the norm is 3-6 minute songs of varying genre and structure. A 10+ minute song easily demands more attention, and if not directed towards the right listener it’s going to fly by with little impact. 7empest is 15 minutes and 44 seconds long, that’s longer than some EPs!

Either that, or it’s a perception of it being “big brain time” music, ie: pompous and bigheaded, and “too intelligent for you, you wouldn’t get it”.

That’s just my theory, anyway. Personally anything Tool puts out is exactly what I’m looking for in their releases.

Haha must have gone over this quite a few times across the thread by now (not that you'd have any reason to mine it!) - I don't like the production (esp. guitar tones) and find their riffs/melodies in general boring as hell. As a rhythm album this is obviously way above water, but most of the protracted grooves or dynamic shifts do very little for me - it feels like an indulgent set of extended jams with a few cool moments designed to showcase a set of chops everyone already knew they had. I've cooled down since first listening and finding a lot of these things totally insufferable - Descending and Pneuma are pretty decent tracks I guess - but it hasn't exactly grown on me meanwhile. No issue with longer tracks (hell, my favourite album is still probably Choirs of the Eye), but I don't feel that these cover enough ground melodically or atmospherically to merit that much attention ;]

I love Tool with all my heart but this ain't it. It pales in comparison to their previous material in any way except for Danny's performance.

In short, it's Tool doing Tool but worse. Compelling in its competence, sure, but there's not a single track here that offers the whole songwriting package delivered coherently. Every song has a throwaway moment or six, and some of the transitions are outright out of nowhere, which is not what I expected. So many intros/outros seem superfluous (Descending, Jesus Christ).

Still don't hate it though, so who am I to judge

I think one of my least favorite parts of this whole record is how Chocolate Chip Trip is completely ruined by that weird "do-do-do-do-DO" alien sounding thing in the background. It's literally all I can focus on the entire track. Danny is fucking crushing it and I cant even focus on it bc of that bs. Luckily when I saw them live they had a different backing track for it, so I could actually enjoy it.

It's a good record, certainly not a bad one at least in my personal opinion. But lackluster production and songwriting really hold this back for me. The band's weakest effort, but definitely not a 1.

@Johnny thanks for replyin man, great analysis

personally this feels like a culmination of everything Tool has done so well and is particularly effective as a swansong, it's like they distilled their best elements into 10 minute masterpieces. Maybe I'm biased cus I tend to love their longer cuts so the 10+ minute thing really works for me. But man, to me the music isn't only technically astounding, but just flat out beautiful (the production sounds as good as it could have been imo). interesting how there are such opposing opinions but hey, that's the beauty of music I guess
