all's i can say is that Stare is more memorable than this for now, but I love being victimized by this oppressive sound and idc about anything other than the atmosphere rn, which is fantastic afaic

“I feel like this is moving the goalposts because the whole point is this ALBUM is not unique, not the BAND
Refining one's formula instead of reinventing is not inherently a negative tho and I feel like we've been here before / are going around in circles now“
I was asking to name me an album that sounds like this. If you can’t, then maybe your perception of this album not being unique is flawed. This album clearly has the trademark sound Ulcerate is known for, but it expands upon it and adds new dimensions you wouldn’t find in their other albums. Therefore, it’s certainly distinct enough to be unique, rather than a mere rehash of an older sound

Even then it doesn’t matter much because it still sounds awesome

“My main issue, and this was a big point of the review, is the lack of memorability.” I think you are confusing this album for Shrines Of Paralysis

This is one of their least dissonant and most melodic albums which makes it more memorable than their earlier albums by principle, even if it may stand out less or sound more artificial (I disagree)

Hmm I'd say this is actually pretty similar to Pyrrhon's Abcess Time as an experience, except that album begins plodding and ramps up, while this maintains a similar mood throughout. The opener off this in particlarly really reminds me of the t/t on Abscess Time (except that is obviously through Pyrrhon's lens ofc). Melodically this is also pretty comparable to both Dodecahedron releases, and I hear a lot of Mispyrming in the riffs too. I also hear plenty of Deathspell Omega, Portal and Plebeian Grandstand in this too, but that might just be me.
edit: on second thought, the Portal comp is probably a stretch

Shrines has multiple tracks I'd consider essential and highly memorable, namely There Are No Saviours and End the Hope.
Also idk where the claim comes from that I'm "actively trying to hate this". I don't hate this. I just think it's okay. Profile name just pokes fun at the general mindset of the site, which is you don't DARE suggest this band could release anything sub-perfection.

No one is saying you are actively hating it. Also it’s true that this band can’t release anything sub-perfection. How can you when you’ve ascended into a higher plane of being?

Joss has to be doing this for the memes… “ascended to a higher plane of being” is giving me some weird vibes. Finally ‘those’ comparisons are starting to make sense

ascended to a higher plane of being
is defs the hardest i've chuckled at this thread since
You're either the kind of person who loves a certain bottle or region and notices the differences of vintage year to year, or you're the person who just grabs whatever screwtop is on sale and hope it impresses your friends because the label is quirky
maybe its best days aren't behind it
