I actually love Manson and DEG lol. Kyo was always more influenced by The Downward Spiral so thats not surprising.

Coming back to this record yet again, I really like the atmosphere it creates. It is very distinct from their other albums in that regard. The subtle use of electronic elements is one that I really enjoy, and I think many tracks are enhanced because of it

After seeing TIW live yesterday, I can say I have a bit of an appreciation for it now cause it translates better live than in the studio. FWIW, I had a pretty good time seeing DEG live even if it's one of their weaker albums IMO.

Oh damn, how was the show? I've heard good things about this American tour so far online

I had a friend who went to the SF and he hated it so much that he bailed after 4 songs. And because of that, I came in w/super low expectations made even worse considering I've been lukewarm towards TIW up until now, but surprisingly I really enjoyed it. They brought visuals this time, the band performed great and overall I felt like their stage show in America's improved since the last time in 2015.
The setlist is pretty much TIW, The World Of Mercy, Merciless Cult and a random old song in the encore which has never been the same each night. So far they've played Sustain the untruth (LA), Hydra 666 (SF), Fukai (Denver), The Deeper Vileness (Chicago) The Final (Cleveland), Saku (NYC), Wake (Dallas), and Gaika, Chinmoku ga Nemuru Koro (Houston).
NYC was probably the most enthusiastic/vocal crowd on the American tour (Chicago would be 2nd based on reports I've heard). That said, I'm bumping this album up a half-point cause given the benefit of doubt regarding how well it translates live, it's a much better album live than in a studio setting.

Almost went to the Cleveland show... kicking myself now, would have died to see THE FINAL live.
Houston got lucky with Gaika, Chinmoku ga Nemuru Koro, that song is always awesome live. Same goes for Saku. Would be cool if next time they come they play a variety of songs, not just from one album. Shinya said they would like to come back again next year if this tour goes well, so heres hoping they do. Any highlights from your show? In one of the concerts Kyo's mic stopped working near the end of The World of Mercy, so he just sang without one.

IDK if I can call it a highlight but there was the crowd going noticeably crazier during Merciless Cult and Saku. I will say that The World Of Mercy was my personal favorite track of the night apart from the aforementioned two. If DEG return next year with more variety in the set, that’d be awesome and unexpected.

Saku must have been quite something to witness live!

For me, the anticipation of the rotating old song in the encore was pretty exciting cause it could’ve been ANYTHING.
I saw their tech equipping Toshiya’s Rising Sun bass and Kaoru’s blue guitar before they went into Saku and I knew it had to be a Vulgar through Uroboros era song. I thought “Kodou? Beautiful Dirt? The IIID Empire?” and when Kyo let that scream at the beginning of Saku we all went “OH SHIT.”

Glad to see this tour is going much better than the 2018 tour.

Oh definitely it went down well Calc, no major tech fails at all as far as I know.
Also, learning my lesson from the 2015 show, watching the band from the balcony seats was the right move cause I was able to immerse in the show without the annoyance of being pushed and squeezed the entire night.

@Acme What made your friend hate the SF show so much? Was it the fact they were playing TIW songs?

I was pushed and squeezed the hardest in my life on one Dir En Grey show.
I already have a psychological fear i think

@Irony My friend thought the mix sucked ass, and the fans being quite goofy and obnoxious. Ironically, he actually loves TIW more than me.
@Gonzo For me, it depends on the band. I saw Daughters headline Brooklyn and it was all around chaos for an hour straight. But the difference is, they’re a band that warrants it cause their music is schizophrenic. DEG though? Honestly, I just think most of the crowd pushes/shoves/mosh (if we can call it that) just to sneakily get up close & try to get a good look of their favorite band member in the flesh.

Interview with Kyo. He wishes fans would be quieter during slow songs, unsurprisingly.

I wish that for any concert I've gone to ever. There are always people at venues that aren't there specifically for the band, but just want to socialize at a show. Those people are especially apparent at smaller venues during quiet moments.

Ranunculus is enough to make me like this album lol. Still really have only listened to the full record like twice
