this is still pretty overrated. I appreciate that it helped open my mind to country music but I've easily heard at least 10 albums in the genre just as good since its release

not to start a debate again but the appeal was never about country. it’s a pop record w/ a country aesthetic for swift, carly, lorde etc. fans

I’ll admit that it has started to bother me the SLIGHTEST bit that both “high horse” and “slow burn” replace a “real” chorus with a sort of melisma trick that doesn’t quite make up the difference

I mean, that criticism presupposes that the songs are "supposed" to have a "real" chorus.

You can kinda dance through High Horse easily enough that it doesn't need anything more substantial maybe

they’re both dope songs but especially high horse could use a little juice in the chorus, a little “woah now”. A little Stevie wonder. My friend defended it using his upbringing on Indian raga music which I found interesting

Haha what was his case?
they played High Horse on a reality tv show I was watching when two of the stars went on a gym date and it was a mood

I don’t REALLY remember and was hoping one of you guys would fill in the blanks of his logic but I guess it had to do with the (putative) similarities between the sort of droning instrumental backdrop of raga (which in this case maybe has its correlative in the held chord of “high horse”’s chorus, the sort of staid quality I’m calling out, the feeling of Sameness) and the kacey’s melisma/“hi-I-I-gh hooooorse” vis a vis the classic raga vocal style. He just dropped it in casual conversation, wasn’t some grand theory but it sort of made sense to me
