Man, even Wake Up is tight, save the repetitive chorus. Love the lyrics about the world burning, while people sit around and do nothing.

Also a pleasant surprise was the post-metal/sludge outros many of the songs have. Somebody's been listening to some Cloudkicker!

"Come on, we gotta wake up!" is seriously the corniest shit Thrice have done in their career (which was a damn fine one up until this release).

'Love the lyrics about the world burning, while people sit around and do nothing.'

They literally have done that before (and way better) with actual emotion behind the idea like 15 years ago.

corny shit [2]

I was gonna say... wasn't that the premise of Fire from Alchemy Index?

'They are sick, they are poor and they die by the thousands and we look away.'

from Cold Cash and Colder Hearts.

'They light the world on fire, just to watch it burn.'

from Paper Tigers.

Both on Artist in the Ambulance circa 2003- wouldn't surprise me if there is similar stuff on the albums before it but this is just off the top of my head. Some of the shit on this feels too on the nose and doesn't have much passion behind it. Pretty weak.

Well they were telling people to Wake Up in 2007, but people still aren't waking up, so they gotta go and tell them again.

Also, I'm not sure how you can hear Dustin's singing and claim that Thrice lacks passion? He's got as emotional a voice of any singer in the genre. The lyrics are one thing, the way he delivers them is entirely another.

^ Agreed so hard. A lot of the lyrics here rub me the wrong way because of how underwhelming they are, but Dustin's voice is pure emotion

It just feels so goddamn vanilla and more forced than a constipated shit. Wake Up is probably the single most shitty song they've ever written. It's the shittiest song on their shittiest album. That's how shit it is.

Yeah there are still some really lyrically strong songs on here though, regardless of Stay With Me or Wake Up

I absolutely fucking love the verses of Hurricane and Salt and Shadow

“Now sheltered in shadows,

The quiet song of your breath stirs the dark.

Your skin like a rose ‘neath my hand.”

“The sky took its cue, every color and hue on display

Till thick veils of indigo signaled the end of the day

But each landscape that lies in the mirror of your eyes turns to grey”

Dustin’s still got it y’all
