Perfect Life is good but my least favorite on here. I've always loved Transience, agreed with Rik there.
FOABP, The Incident, and this one are a trilogy of concept albums about isolation in my book
That's an interesting way to look at it. I always thought of FoaBP, Insurgentes, and The Incident as a trilogy of sorts given the musical directions they take with how dark and noisy they get. The Incident is mainly alt./prog rock though, so they might not fit as well as I thought.

isolation/problems with communication in the modern world is definitely a recurring theme in wilson's art. in fact it already appears on (if not dominates) 1996's signify - the very first album with serious lyrics from him.
i also agree on "transience". a sweet little ballad with a beautiful melody, definitely an album highlight

Man Transcience is so haunting. God this album is so good.
If you don't get a lump in your throat during "Happy Returns/Ascendant Here On..." then you're missing something.

Yeah Wilson always nails those emotional album closers, except for FoaBP lol not that PT were going for balladry with that one.

Yep, this one's got one of his best endings. The Raven and In Absentia end on a maginificent note as well.

Don't forget Deadwing. Glass Arm Shattering might be my favourite PT closing track. Feels like a feverish dream.

i never liked this one myself. if we're talking wilson/pt closing balladry it's
raven >
fadeaway > like dust > happy > i drive > collapse >
dark matter > stop swimming >
insurgentes > feel so low > glass arm
for me

Hmm, let's see.
Raven=Fadeaway=Happy Returns=Glass Arm > Dark Matter > Feel so Low = I Drive... > Collapse... > Stop Swimming > Insurgentes > Like Dust...

The Raven is up there, Dark Matter too. It'd be difficult to rank them all for me, especially when including his solo albums and side projects like Blackfield and No-Man.

trueee. If we include Blackfield, I'd put End of the World, but that's written by Aviv Geffen, so...

Ljudet Innan, from Storm Corrosion is up there, too, although in many ways it's kind of a Talk Talk song.
But I think the reason he's so great at handling album-closing is that his closers just tend to be in logical and natural continuity with what was built during the rest of the album.

''Hey brother, our dreams are scratched on these four walls
But they're foreign to me now, strangers once again
Well I am deep in debt to time, and every day's the same
I'm wasted, like rainfall on a thousand rooftops
Stretching on for miles, but a hand cannot erase
The traffic sings me back to sleep, and the world just slips away''
these are the original lyrics to Happy Returns, originally titled ''Last Regret''. I just listened to the demo.

"Hey brother, I feel I'm living in parentheses"
That's a great line, actually. The lyrics on this song are overall surprisingly good. And they definitely improved since the demo state as we can see.
In my opinion "Ljudet Innan" is not just the best closing ballad but probably the best song Wilson has ever had anything to do with (maybe together with "the number song" from Bass Communion). The Talk Talk influence is definitely there sonewhere, but calling it a Talk Talk song is more than an overstatement.

Yeah Ljudet Innan is amazing
altertide what song is that from Bass Communion? I just got most of their albums. The three Drugged songs are incredible.
