I've listened to a bunch of bands essentially in reverse chronological order simply because I hadn't heard
of them until their most up-to-date release.
Often in those cases their older albums end up being my favorites. There is something to be said for
enjoying the first album you hear by a band the most, but I think that's only when you've had time to let it
sink in / idolize the shit out of it. If you listen to the new Swans first, then listen to The Seer,
and so on, with a few weeks between each one, I doubt it will make much difference in terms of how the order
factors into your opinions on each respective release.

No way, The Seer is essential.

if you listen to old Swans first you might realize how the Seer is one of their weakest albums

Or I could listen to the Seer first, then listen to their back catalogue, and come to the same conclusion. My point is that it makes no difference, unless time plays a big role allowing you to digest, associate memories, idolize, etc. Listening to a discog over the course of a few months doesn't afford that process any time to occur - so order makes no difference.
Also, The Seer is one of their best.

disagree with that assertion, tristan. i think the seer is a masterpiece, but i'm equally blown away by white light

The Seer is pretty impressive as a creation but as listening music I just don't get it.

When an album is released and it's their only material to date, you have no choice but to re-listen, let it grow, and attach meaning to the music. So that's why people who follow a band from its inception have a much firmer grasp on how each successive release stacks up. For example, I'll go toe-to-toe with anyone arguing about Brand New.
However, in the cases being discussed, where it's about quantitative consumption over a finite time span, then order matters much less. /end rant, it just seemed like nobody understood what I was getting at and I wanted to clarify.
