no comparison possible
speaking of comparisons
this vs glassjaw's worship and tribute

Nah first two volta records are better than this.

lol deloused never gets within a sniff of this
|

Deloused is a more trippy version of this record. A lot of the post hardcore is still there

Deloused is just barely a good album and is usually a chore for me to listen to in its entirety. This also clears W&T pretty easily but I’m not big on the Glassjaw vocalist outside of Tip Your Bartender, which is incredible and their best song imo, and a couple others icr the names of

Amp is best Volta, no TMV comes close to this mind
Yank Crime is me fave post-hxc these days but the nostalgic vibes of this is hard to beat otherwise

This is a lot more pop than a lot of those other 90s post hardcore groups, an important part of its appeal imo. That's the reason these guys were able to blow past the Unwounds, Drive Like Jehus, and Jesus Lizards of the world in notoriety, while not exactly being better.

okay The Always Open Mouth is my actual fave post hxc (oversight!) and it’s not particularly close tbh
sure, this is more accessible on the whole than those bands. Mostly talking about completely different eras / scenes tho, so not sure what your point is exactly (I mean TJL especially are not comparable)

This is simply an all around excellent album, hard to pinpoint many faults or bad songs. The same can’t be said of TAOM. Much as I love that album and it’s a genre favourite, not everything lands or is of equal quality. I’m glad they push the envelope and experiment so much within the genre and I wish more bands would do this, but I can’t pretend everything there is a slam dunk

Only listening because I heard about them through The Mars Volta. Not really my thing and I rarely like post-hardcore but I still think it's good. I can see its influence on bands I do like including Billy Talent, My Chemical Romance and Enter Shikari. Some similarities to stuff like The Aqua Bats.

I have strong nostalgia bias for TAOM but it has been remarkably enduring and consistently surprising in its longevity. Whereas here (despite the same supposed bias), I can pinpoint areas that have fallen off over the years (and honestly, the prod could be better lets be real)

frances clears this but invalid litter dept. might probably be the best thing omar and cedric ever did

also re: phxc i would like to enter my hat in the ring and say Wrong (Nomeansno) is probably front to back the best the genre has to offer.

"Wrong" is technically very accomplished, can be riotously daft fun with plenty of innovative ideas etc. but it leaves effectively no emotional imprint - it's a good time gal.
idk I still dust it off semi-regularly but for top shelf post hxc I'd kinda like a little more meaningful attachment

Yeah Wrong is a fun spectacle album but I wouldn't put it at the top of the tree. New Plastic Ideas is probably the best broadchurch genre representative as far as balancing the 90s' angular stylings and battery acid aesthetic with 00s angst , but this album is as good an ambassador as any
also Worship and Tribute >> TAOM if we're talking early 2000s experimental staples, songwriting is a cut above, plays far less as a novelty gauntlet (and superior vox obviously)

New Plastic Ideas is tied w this as my favorite post hc
