having been through this thing hundreds of times now, the only song I can truly fathom calling a "low point" is breaking the silence. Ironically, that song was my favorite from age 7 to like 20.
I don't think its crazy to call Needle Lies and BTS the lesser tracks, but they are still top fuckin notch. Needle Lies is like the best song Iron Maiden never wrote, and Breaking the Silence would be in the pantheon of greatest glam songs ever written, if they were a glam band. Even THEN, it still brings the fuckin' riffs, man.

Ugh. This is not what anyone wants to hear, but the more I listen to this, the more I feel like it's just a lesser version of Scenes From a Memory. DT basically did everything Queensryche does here on that album, but better.

The similarities are not very upfront though. Dream Theater made an album with much attention to leitmotifs and long instrumental parts, both of which this album doesn't have anything. At heart, this is a song album - an album of catchy tracks that are hold together by a storyline. And it's freaking awesome in doing that.

Also, you can't compare '99 prog metal to this, let alone Dream Theater's style on Scenes.

One can compare and/or contrast any two things, really.

I can definitely see the similarities, but they're very different so saying they did the same thing, but better doesn't hold much water imo. They're 5s imo but for different reasons. Looking at catchy tracks this one takes the cake. Looking at prog madness it's Scenes From A Memory
