This is at least top 5 DT in my opinion; the concision - or maybe, coherence, for lack of better terms - of the instrumental sections is a major improvement over the previous two albums

I feel people focus too much on the Portnoy departure when considering this album. I thinks it's fantastic regardless of whatever circumstances the band was undergoing. They managed to provide something really special here, something that demands careful attention, as a true Dream Theater album should.
Personally, I find myself continually returning to this album lately, and for good reason––it's got those thrill inducing prog vibes I haven't felt since Images and Words or Octavarium. Anyone feel the same way? Forgive me if I sound naive, but having listened to this for quite some time now, my feelings concerning it have only grown––much like Rush's Grace Under Pressure––it just really grew on me. (I was also skeptical at first, like most)

This is more of an album for people who are already fans of the band.
If you're new to Dream Theater, it's recommended to start with Images & Words or Scenes From A Memory but I'd also add Awake to the mix.

Was listening to this this morning and honestly it was still pretty good. Shame the drums sound sucks and there is pretty much no bass guitar

This could have been a nice EP or mini album with On The Backs Of Angels, Bridges In The Sky, Breaking All Illusions and Beneath The Surface (cheesy, but quite nice actually). I don't get why their records have to be over 70 min long. I&W has 57 min and it's just long enough

Backs, Bridges, Breaking, Beneath are all good stuff. The rest doesn't do too much for me
