Make that three! It's alright I guess but fuck, getting tired of the blackgaze trend that most of you (minus redsky) are all just hoping on board with. Sunbather is like the culmination of that awful trend.
there's literally nothing shoegaze about sunbather, and by extension blackgaze
it's literally just envy but black metal, that's it

The album's atmosphere reminds me of early shoegaze but I wouldn't really go as far as to call the album itself that

lol, how
it doesn't have any vocal melodies, let alone vocal melodies that fade into the guitars, nor many guitar effects, let alone changing between guitar effects or layering them on past what you'd expect of any black metal band
those are the only three defining factors shoegaze has and sunbather is none of them

i don't really understand why so many people say deafheaven aren't black metal. there's always going to be the kvlter-than-thou types that are butthurt because their genre of choice that has long been dominated by hairy basement welders is now being played by hipster pretty boys and covered on sites like pitchfork, and to an extent i can understand why they wouldn't be eager to accept a band like this. but looking strictly at the music and not the image, it just don't understand how it's not black metal. of course there's a lot of other influences in their music from other genres (screamo, post-rock, shoegaze) so it's not gonna sound like burzum or mayhem or darkthrone or whatever, but all of their stylistic wanderings are still layed over a core foundation of tremolo riffs, blast beats, and tortured shrieks with trebley production. i can see why elitists wouldn't dig it but to say it's not black metal at all is just kind of silly to me.

i also think that the claims of shoegaze influence are pretty exaggerated, i mean i guess it has some shoegaze-esque atmosphere but it's not really influenced by shoegaze enough to warrant the "blackgaze" tag. i think screamo is actually their biggest outside influence, besides maybe post-rock. the envy comparison makes a lot more sense than whatever shoegaze band people compare them too.

Listen to the first three minutes of the title track and try to tell me it isn't shoegaze influenced. The guitar leads in the album reek of it.

Adam's saying it sounds like Envy + Slowdive + black metal pretty much fits perfectly. Still, debating which genres are most prominent is stupid and pointless.

sunbather sounds like post-rock with the loud parts being influenced by black metal (i dont know, like the blast beats and the shrieked vocals and all the lengthy tremolo picked guitar parts).
i also don't listen to any black metal so my assessment is probably crap.
