Every now and then an old metal band (or their record label) decide that a classic album of theirs sounds too dated for today's musical landscape and decide to re-record their masterpiece with overprocessed lifeless drums, lower tunings that suck the energy dry to gain a supposed heaviness factor, and slower tempos so as not to break their aging bodies. The re-recording of Lightning to the Nations is no different and, like other metal album re-recordings, should not exist. There is magic in the old recordings that you simply can't get back, proven time and time again whether it's Exodus or Flotsam and Jetsam doing it.

I suppose they think a sound akin to modern metal might bring new, younger fans

The short answer is $$$ though, as it always is

yeah just listened to the new version of Am I Evil... it's not the worst thing ever, I could easily see a modern heavy/doom band making a song like that. but compared to the original it's the worst thing ever.

Harris's vocals really give this album something that no other band had, whereas the guy on the new version is just kinda generic
