the driving force behind shadow of the colossus is that the entire time you're seeking out and killing these things, you're contemplating the morality of your decisions. and the pay-off in the penultimate chapter is one of the best ever

it's because the whole draw of the first two games was their atmosphere. in 1 especially - everything was shrouded in fog and the lighting was rather poor at points. those probably don't sound like pros, but enemies weren't crazily detailed so being obscured by darkness and fog made them more ambiguous and thus terrifying. what did they do with 2 and 3? turned up the lighting on everything and drowned out that dreamy haze-like aesthetic that made them staples in survival horror
