This album seems like their transition between their harder rock origins and Mathew's abilities with orchestrating a more diverse sound of the overall band's timbre.

thats why I appreciate bands like Ulver that at least tries to excel in different directions, lets face it most band are just lazy and easy money doesn't seem encourage these "artists"

Yeah but these guys a terrible these days. The two albums that proceed BHAR are just awful. Drones was okay, but nowhere near the same level as this.

I mean their old albums get worse every year since i've listened to them. I feel like i've fallen out. W/e

Just listened to Hysteria with a good subwoofer for the first time. Holy shit.

This review sums up my thoughts almost exactly, nostalgia would have me 5 this & not look back but there are definite flaws which can't be ignored. I still think this is the best Muse though, OoS isn't quite as consistent even if it does have a few of their best tracks.

How bad was The Resistance though? Sort of forgot they existed for a while after that.

Erf...It was my first rock album so I'm quite forgiving about it, but it's probably really poor. Uprising and Undisclosed Desires are generic and regressive, United States of Eurasia/Unnatural Selection/MK Ultra are okay, while Guiding Light is one of the worst songs ever written. Make your own mind imo, it's mostly a Queen rip-off.

Apologies, I meant The Resistance IS really bad, realise now I worded it like a question which needed answering. I forgot they existed after releasing that terrible album...

Now, I just accept they changed & can enjoy the older stuff when I'm (occasionally) in the mood for it.

Ahah, my bad then. Their new releases are indeed quite terrible (even though Drones is somewhat okay), as they've been going downhill since Black Holes And Revelations. I don't know if the band still has the talent to be interesting again, or if they've definitely started their musical retreat.

The piano break in Ruled By Secrecy is a special moment. Really powerfully done.

Drones is marginally worse than 2nd Law. At least 2nd Law is fun as fuck

Woudn't call the 2nd Law fun at all, it sounds like a long, painful exercice in which the band tries to be as bombastic and generic as possible, raking everything from Queen to U2.

Imo Drones is slightly better in terms of composition.

I doubt it's even possible when The 2nd Law is a part of their discography

I at least remember sections of 2nd Law because moments did stand out
Drones is dry as fuck, just awful

I mean I like all of their albums enough to give them a 3, but The 2nd Law is the worst of the bunch.

Muse doing brostep with symphonic prog undertones is far more interesting than them doing a trite combination of Origin of Symmetry and BH&R
