i have weird feelings on this! i feel like a lot of it is a bit too.... obvious musically? kind of a weird thought coming from me who wishes everything was like 20x catchier, but with how much she was going for thematically and lyrically on this album it kind of feels like a pretty basic pop album underneath it all and that limits the ceiling for me
still like it quite a bit because i like the songs and really admire the scope of this, i just find the two to be a bit at odds. idk weird thoughts

Literally one of the best things I've ever heard. I wouldn't change a thing. It resonates a lot with me - being raised homeschooled, heavily Christian, and witnessing/experiencing a lot of familial abuse. When I listen to this, it feels like the first time I heard Brand New (ironic lol) when I was 13 and I was mesmerized.

Hard times might be the saddest song I've ever heard. It's so beautiful and well made but it's so damn sad. I'm crying.

This album is definitely spiritual. It's coming to terms of the evils of the church. But she still asks for Jesus? Is that ironic? Im still listening. There is for sure trauma and this is tough to listen to at times. It's so beautiful while showing the total dark side.

there's an amazing lyric on her Inbred EP where she says "I'm not scared of God, I'm scared He was gone all along" and I feel like it encapsulates a lot of her themes

Yeah that’s a great moment on Inbred. I know I’m pretty much alone here in my love for that one (and admittedly I can see why people going backwards to that from this would find it comparatively underwhelming) but I really do hope her earlier material doesn’t get too overshadowed by this. Inbred is still a (slightly lesser) 5 for me alongside this and Golden Age isn’t far behind (maybe I should review that one too???).
And yes twilight, “Hard Times” is just incredible, pretty easily my 2022 SOTY.

i haven’t read anything before my first comment two pages ago lol but would it be completely insane to call this like, pop slowcore? it feels so minimal in a way that lots of my favorite slowcore stuff does. can’t say i’ve ever heard a version of thar that sounds like this

Yeah loveis, imo the core of her sound is essentially slowcore with modern alt-pop production so that characterization makes sense. And nice shout for “Western Nights,” probably the most underrated track here.

it’s the perfect example of what i mean imo
i find every word she says to be immersive in a way that makes me way more aware of lyrics than i usually would be right off the bat. vocal melodies (obv) the main highlight of this overall 4 me and western nights has my favorite vocal composition, and i think the subtle ambience of the instrumentals r dynamic and perfect

Yeah the composition of these songs is always very “singer/songwriter” despite the elevated production and variety of the arrangements. And agreed on “Western Nights,” I’ve seen a lot of folks have trouble with it due to being another minimal ballad type track following “A House In Nebraska” but I find that section of the album incredibly immersive in how it unfolds the story and the composition of those two tracks is really quite different from each other despite being so minimal. Genius stuff. I really do think she’s one of the most unique and quietly innovative artists out there right now, doing way more to progress slowcore/dream pop etc. than anyone else I can think of recently.
