well yeah if you broaden the criteria beyond the atmosludge mainstays, Feedbacker and Choirs of the Eye are comfortably the peak of the genre and Ashes can go toe to toe with most of the best of the big 3
don't think the Ocean have any business on that level, very 3.5 band - far too much bland prog faff
so there are plenty of options, but it rly is one of those genres where being a happy eater is not the one — if it's not apex shit, my interest in returning to it is v limited

Precambrian is the only Ocean that really captured my imagination and sustained it to this day (not close to peak, but v good and fairly distinct)

definitely agreed tho, as I just find myself retuning to that atmosludgy sound (forgetting the broader post distinction / influence for a min) less and less, whereas at one point I really did want to ramp up my consumption beyond the classic trio even more

The only Post Metal I care about these days is the band my UPS guy is in.

Ayil was a shocker at the time for sure. That breakdown specifically may be Armine's best work.

Can see that aspect for sure. They got super proggy after the first 3-4 albums but I have a soft spot for them lol.
