Ready to be crucified for saying I prefer the art direction and noise rock/post punk sound on the debut. I guess I just like shorter songs most of the time when I'm not sitting down to listen to a record.

You realize the average song length (even ignoring the intro track) is shorter here than on the debut, right?

True, but I'm referring to the pacing more than anything. Also the album itself is longer by a good margin.

Reasonable to prefer that style, I just think they do this one better

Holy shit, I’ve been really enjoying this since it dropped and had given it a 4.5 but my latest listen just now absolutely walloped me, I totally connected with the emotional core of this thing and it just made me feel things I haven’t felt from music in a good while. It reminds me of many of my favorites in the best way, and if future listens stand up to that one it will easily enter their ranks.
In other words, fuck it, it’s a 5.

It fell off for me a lot after listen six
I was toying with 3.5'ing it after listen four

Fair enough. I think that “emotional core” I mentioned is really the key here, it took me some time but I’ve now really connected with Isaac’s lyrics and delivery (despite how much I didn’t connect with it on the first album) and that provides a strong through-line that holds everything together. “Concorde”, “Bread Song”, and “Snow Globes” are perfect and most of the rest isn’t far behind.
Ranked/rated:
Concorde [5] (I connected with this one immediately, love it love it love it)
Snow Globes [5] (this one also clicked early, the drums are incredible)
Bread Song [5] (love the lyrical metaphors in this one, the moment when the drums snap into place might be the best on the album)
Haldern [4.5] (haunting)
Basketball Shoes [4.5] (a much better closing opus than “Opus”)
Blade [4.5] (channels the sweeping baroque Bowie/Destroyer vibe in the best way)
Intro/Chaos Space Marine [4.5] (channels the sweeping baroque Funeral era Arcade Fire vibe in the best way)
Good Will Hunting [4] (don’t looooove the first part but the ending is great)
Mark’s Theme [3.5] (it’s fine for what it is, transitions well into the second half)

Yeah, part of me wanted to think RYM was over-hyping it but it really is that good! First 5 I’ve given a new release since 2017.
And I'm feeling kinda normal with a packed lunch
Train rides don't hurt much these days
We're all working on ourselves
And we're praying that the rest don't mind how much we've changed
So if you see me looking strange with a fresh style
I'm still not feeling that great…
Fuck

That’s a good ranking actually, disagree on the scores (obvs) but the ordering is rock-solid.
Also nice to see Doof & Boney actually disagree on something 😄

It’s a fairly rare occurrence but it certainly happens - especially with emo stuff.

I'll agree with Boney that this is the 'most improved' album compared to its predecessor so far released this year :D
