"There's one that did a video on Five finger death punch and she clearly didn't like it but didn't say anything negative to pander to the fans"
Sounds like Beth Roars. She is very bad imo, but a cute red head brings the clixx I guess
I mean, she cried while listening to Hexes by Tesseract. It wasn't convincing at all.

"The doctors said otherwise and I'm sure they're more competent than most voice coaches on YT"
You're gonna have to provide some citation of this, because I haven't heard of any medical interventions that Devy has needed for his voice.
Also, watching this Ansley video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgBMWUwCdq4) is both good and bad, because he's also interpreting the performance aspect and relating it to his vocal technique. Like Devin does a herky jerky headbang (15:55) and Ansley talks about how he shook his head to release vocal tension. Yeah, gonna disagree on that.

I'll link it when I found it!

What's the problem with that one? Shaking the head is a common thing to get rid of neck tension and all this stuff

It might be, but Ansley is also interpreting elements of his performance (like the facial expressions) as necessary elements of his singing. I pointed out the head bob, because it was fairly clearly not the kind of headshake that Ansley was describing.
Like for instance, one of the (admittedly simple) lessons I learned from watching Townsend videos is how softly he's singing all the time. He's barely singing above a conversational volume pretty much the entire time which told me that i was projecting and working too damn hard whenever I was singing. So even though Ansley talks about how much effort and tension Townsend has, which is associated with strain I know that Townsend isn't really all that tense because he's almost definitely not straining himself.
This isn't to say that Ansley's advice isn't good advice or that Townsend's technique is perfect. He does point out some things which are useful, like the glottal closing. And he also admits that some of the things Devy does are for effect and not because of bad technique. But at the same time he's also pointing out things that (to me) are almost certainly done for effect.

Oh yea, that's fair criticism I'd say. I mean, Zach clearly knows about the artistry, but he makes that aspect take a backseat to point out the health stuff, because that's his profession.

For sure. You were right in noting how he does take a more detailed and critical approach to vocal technique and there's plenty to learn. And I find it amusing that at certain points Ansley even goes "I have no idea how he's doing that and I'm not even going to try to imitate or describe it".

Alright real talk, was anyone else worried that the departure from Sumerian would've drug a nail into this band's desire to create emotionally devastating music? Because after hearing rumors that tracks like "Catch Fire" and "Heavy Heart" were label-influenced, I certainly was.

I didn't care about that tbh. Catch Fire was cringe imo, Heavy Heart was fun though. Wouldn't call either 'emotionally devastating'.

This album as whole is not really that different from P3 honestly lol, I'd say it has just about the same amount of poppy bits as P3 and Jugg

@kalk: well tbh if those were label influenced, who knows what a song like Lune was. I cared bc I wanted something to at least come close to Absolomb or Lune for me...and Satellites did that.

Sumerian just wanted Periphery to write poppier shit. Which they do but not nearly as often as Sumerian wanted.

I think, for me, the trilogy on P:3 is some of their most emotional shit. "The Way the News Goes" "Absolomb" and "Lune" are absolutely perfect. I really dig some of their emotional moments on this album as well, and maybe they'll grow on me, but P:3 is still the album in their discography that hits me the hardest.
