@Sweeney: I mean in general, often times bands like this have a mob of people knocking them, and sometimes RYM has a higher average than this site...that should really say it all imho.

Agent go away, Bring Me The Horizon definitely doesn't want you to defend them, after those side shots.

^^ deathbat gets it ~ it's not necessarily a negative thing either. it's like if i went onto a website that caters towards an audience that prefers arthouse films to blockbuster hits and started raving about infinity wars, y'know? there's a specific demographic that's being catered to here which causes that mentality but i do believe the appeal of many commercially viable albums is lost on the majority of this site's most vocal users.

I get what you're saying, but I disagree somewhat. I think this album subverted a lot of my expectations because it wasn't so down the line in terms of commercial appeal. Most people keep saying they've "gone pop", and while I agree it's slightly more appealing to mainstream audiences, I still think it retains an engaging sound. Like I've said before; it's a sound that 30STM and Linkin Park attempted and failed miserably.

There are certain records that have been released throughout the course of history that have completely shocked the music world. It's a combination of inerpia, intelligence, benevolence, and geological ancestry which makes these albums so forceful and overwhelming. There's only 1 band who has released multiple albums under this sunset: Bring Me the Horizon, with 2015's "That's the Spirit", and 2019's "Amo".

@Storm: wut
@xiLeadFeather: yeah, that's true. It has a tendency to screw with my head a bit, as at times I can get a bit self-conscious, but if I end up dropping something and everyone here hates it because they're not a fan of the style inherently... it's not the end of the world.

@deathbat 100% agree with you on that
@benecidial o_0
@Gonzo I'm glad you also think that this album is not actually as mainstream as people make it out to be (honestly i feel like TTS was more mainstream than amo) haha. can't tell if the rest of your message is also directed at me which is why i didn't respond lol

and @sweeney, to clarify, i understand why people don't like this band or album, not why people think they're shit. it's one thing to dislike a genre, style, brand, etc but calling an artist/album garbage because (proverbial) you don't understand it or care for it does not make sense. in my mind, you can see this as being analogous to yelp reviews about restaurants. if you know you don't like chinese food, rather than shitting on a 3/4 star chinese restaurant because you inherently hate the style/flavor, why not focus on palates you do enjoy and help steer others who are looking for what you're looking for in the right direction.
all the 1-2's here just seem like people hating on the band/oli/style/switch up/anything but the actual music (unbiased opinion i don't see how this album sits outside the range of 2.5-4; anything above /below means it probably hit a personal chord). for every "generic" lyric there are tons of instrumental pieces that show character and thought. most people who are into this band/style of music are looking for someone/something to relate to; using cliche's and personalizing/flipping them is an easy way to take something that's used in regular dialogue to engage with someone who has no stake in what you're doing while showing them that you've put some effort in making it less bland. may not always hit the mark but it's a surefire way of relating to an audience rather than using overly complex metaphors and symbolism.

I'm pretty sure any music act who is still referred to as a "band" in 2019 is automatically not mainstream. Unless they are from Europe, which BMTH is from...idk...they ain't no Grimes...but then again...they did put her on the album...lmao
