Also, might be Boney's thing...a lot of pedal steel on track 2
Pedal steel, you say?

Ok just tried that track and it was very good, is the rest of the album like that at all?

Album Rating: 4.5
Not really but it sems to be finishing very strong in a more trad folk style
My hunch...you'll be fine with this

I've only recently starting listening to The National. The first time I heard them was on "warrior" and I must admit after listening to this record I'm becoming a fan. Still not ready to drop a rating but it's gonna be a 4+ for sure...

Current Ratings (things starting to settle so this could be a lot more how my eventual ratings end up):
1. Walk it Back [5]
2. The System Only Dreams [5]
3. Sleep Well Beast [5]
4. Guilty Party [5]
5. Carin Liquor Store [4.5]
6. Nobody Else [4.5]
7. Dark Side of Jim [4.5]
8. Born to Beg [4.5]
9. Day I Die [4]
10. Empire Line [3.5] (this has dropped off)
11. I'll Destroy [3.5] (yet to bond with this)
12. Turtlehead [3] (still can't bring myself to 3.5)
I'd now say I might prefer the run of the first five songs to the last four song run. At any rate, both stretches are about even. Tracks 6-8 are a confirmed dip but no disaster.

Carin, I'll Still Destroy You, and Dark Side are top 3

I still think Dark Side is the only clear 5/5 here.

I'll Still Destroy You still just feels like a bit of a bells and whistles job for me, a 'the star is the studio' tune - it might grow on me but I've spun the album 30 times now

Dark Side might be the weakest for me besides Turtleneck

title track, Carin and guilty party are top 3 for me

'Dark Side' is the most War-on-Drugs-y :D
I really like the track, it sounds a million dollars, the song at the heart is a teeny bit too mellow for me to 5/5 it

Day I Die, System.. then an eternal back-and-forth with Born to Beg and Carin

Dark Side has a subtle soul/r&b thing going that I love
And damn Doof, 30 times already? I've barely hit 10!

Matt and Bryan are both absolutely stellar on Destroy You and the lyrics are amazing. Probably my favorite chorus of the album
