Souvlaki, Pygmalion, 5, original s/t are essential Slowdive in that order. anyone who's only heard this and/or Souvlaki, please do your homework

s/t track/EP is excellent, thought this was the thread for it initially. Chance would be a fine thing as it doesn’t even have one.

desperately needs a review
too bad contribs/staff are legally obligated to only review current albums

Was this generally well received then? Finding myself wondering why. This is honestly so watered-down and lifeless compared to everything that came before it. A self-titled comeback album is always a red flag, but nevertheless I had high hopes.
Slomo is a good start, the closer is a little overlong yet I feel like it would work really well in a different context. Apart from that I’m getting nothing. Reminds me of The National’s attempt at a contemporary streamlined sound, losing all personality in the process... yet somehow this is even less interesting. Idk maybe it’s the production, the tension isn’t there, it just drifts by leaving no impact.
tl;dr: I’m just utterly befuddled by this, because as far as I can tell this was deemed a successful comeback.

This is pretty good though imo. I mean, Sugar For The Pill? That's such a lovely track!

It didn’t do anything for me. I realise listening to them ‘back-to-back’ (consecutive days anyway) was perhaps detrimental given this was released over 20 years later, but after Pygmalion this feels so devoid of any creativity or character.

this is really really good. sure it's no souvlaki but there are some absolute bangers here, still incredibly comfy

It’s no Souvlaki, Pygmalion, s/t (EP), or even Just For A Day.

I get what you mean Demon.
I really liked this, especially Slomo, Star Roving and Go Get It (fave here!), but some of these tracks even annoy me nowadays. I might drop my rating a little bit to reflect this.

"It’s no Souvlaki, Pygmalion, s/t (EP), or even Just For A Day."
you are right about that. it was a different era

I know, just wanted to clarify I’m not comparing it to Souvlaki, in fact Souvlaki might not even be their best.
tbc...

this is very good at being a good version of the same dream pop album everyone else was already making when it dropped but yeah, not a patch on Souvlaki/Pygmalion. Defs less of a drag than Just for a Day tho

Yeah the biggest issue I have with this is that it sounds more like modern dream pop than it does the old Slowdive stuff, but then again each of their original albums had a distinct sound, and if they had just retreaded that stuff I would have probably criticized it for that as well. I guess that’s just the problem with comeback albums.

No idea how you listen to this after (mostly) loving/enjoying the rest of Slowdive's catalog and conclude that it's deserving of a 2.0.
Sometimes you are an enigma, Demon.
