Death is great and all, but I've always been more fond of the Malevolent Creation style of dm

I’m not (knowingly) familiar with the style you speak of, or the band (yet). How do you describe it?

Old school thrashy ODSM like Pestillence or SBG/Leprosy era Death, or is that not what you meant?

It's like a blend of death metal and thrash. They focus more on brutality and groove, over complexity, melody and being proggy like Death does.

Other notable examples are Demolition Hammer and Bolt Thrower.

Ah right, so are my examples too far towards typical DM? I thought early Pestilence might count.

I like to think of early Pestilence right at the center of dm, where they ain't drifting too much towards being proggy and complex, and they ain't drifting towards the thrash side either. Other bands I like to place in the center are Sinister and Obituary.

Then you have bands like Monstrosity and Brutality leaning towards the complex and proggy Death side etc.

It's pretty subjective, and it makes more sense to draw a line with bands falling along different points, you know?

I get your general point. I think it's probably safe to say I've listened to 0% from the type of DM you're talking about though, always time to change that of course...

It's the underrated brand of dm imo. There's a lot of shit too of course, but when it's good it is good.

yeah labels and imaginary boundaries are important with all that's going on in music...but sometimes that's the reason why i always prefer to get into the band rather than into the genre...cause somethings that are not quite tangible or expressible drags us in...and not everything within a genre or subgenre is for us.

But is cool to explain DM that way, and i'll listen to that more straight forward DM as you say

Yeah man, take your time. Everyone's got their own methods of how to listen to music.

I mean you gave a very useful explanation! i just sometimes like a lot some band but dislike another that its doing just about the same...and for that i end up feeling stuck in the genre. These guys are awesome though!

I’d love to be able to quantify everything I like about certain genres of music because searching for new stuff would be an exact science & 100% successful. In reality that’s not feasible but at the minute I’m kind of lost even explaining what I may like within metal.

In short I agree, some known direction is useful but you’re never going to know for certain until you take the plunge. Also, part of the fun is in the journey.

I find following record labels you like is a good way to find new stuff. And this place, to an extent, is a great tool for branching out (depending on the genre).

I have tried the label method, but it doesn't work for me. I am quite genre centric, now that I think about it.

One of the most effective things I do when looking for music (or at least when I used to, I don't do it as much anymore) was to use the RYM charts for specific genres. I would go through the first 50 to 100 entries and download them all. To this day, I am still going through the thousands of albums I have downloaded over the years, hence why I don't look for much music anymore lol

I do that too, unless its electronic stuff in which case I almost always buy it because a) lossless audio and b) 99% of good electronic music is impossible to find for free.
