I think it was just different then what people wanted, and once the initial reaction of disappointment was gone and people gave the record another chance, they realized it's pretty good. I know I was thrown a curve ball when I first listened to this, and honestly I think that's partially what FJM wanted to do on this, not create the album people wanted to hear but what he wanted to make, because he could've easily pumped out another Fear Fun or Honeybear album full of innocent tongue and cheek songs about California and love.

Love how there's three different spellings for schtick in three comments on one page :D

I think you need to see the Philly rant to fully "get" this album. Or just be in a deep depressive phase like I am right now.

I wouldn't say Fantano has a ton of sway over people, but w/ almost 1 million subscribers when he gives an album like this a 9/10 you'd probably go in with a more positive mindset in general compared to the 1's and 2's this got hit with here when it leaked.

Fantano's a doofus but he occasionally has good opinions.

Fantano's a doofus but he's been able to perfect the album video review, people tune in because he's succinct, his videos aren't too lengthy and he does a decent job between balancing between artists background, past material, whats on the new record, what he likes and dislikes and gives viewers a forum to discuss it. Everything he does is simple but he's carved out a niche base from nothing, and that deserves some praise.

He deserves credit for building himself up from the ground but the problem is he's ruined his credibility by making himself into a meme.

"ruined his credibility by making himself into a meme"

i dont see any problem with cal chuchesta. but i do with whatever else you are implicitly vilifying about the divine reinvention of MEMES in all their NOBLE and GLORIOUS enumerations

I think Fantano's right more than he's wrong and y'know- music criticism is subjective, tough gig

I kind of disagree with a lot of the premises he takes when analyzing music so that doesn't help either. He's basically this generation's Robert Christgau.
