No, sir. The transitions near the end of the first song especially are pretty rough.

EDIT: I've got a few minutes so I just threw it on. I'll see if I can pinpoint the spots I take issue with.

I've got a bit of egg on my face, dudes. The end of Brought to the Water is pretty lame though. A fadeout directly to a fade-in of that nice piano piece? Why? Seems lazy.

I've got to get back to work, but I'm going to try to finish the album when I get home so I can explain myself better. Again, I know I'm being hypercritical, just know I still love this; it's just that none of these problems were present on Sunbather, imo, so it's hard for me not to notice.

biggest issue was that they rush wrote this in 6 months. if they take their time with the next one then I know they can deliver airtight songwriting

they finished writing it while recording it too I think. There's a quote from the guitarist where he basically said that there's a point where you stop trying to make something perfect due to time constraints, which greatly encapsulates what's wrong with the album imo.

What was the rush anyway? Contractual restraints? Tour/festival commitments? Budget limitations? Did they ever say?

The transitions in the first song are fine and I like that outro, Baby Blue is way more jarring and random. Then the other song where the whole first half is bm and the second is melodic dream pop/post-rock. Both sections are excellent, but it's not exactly adventurous songwriting to structure a song so simply.

for this to be a 4-4.5 sunbather would have to be a 6-6.5 though

Japanese version has From the Kettle Unto the Coil as a bonus track and it's a way better closer than Gifts

That's likely my favorite deafheaven song, tbh. Has some stiff competition though.

I don't get the love for kettle. It has that one really awkward slow heavy riff that cuts in weirdly and the vocals are awful.
