You have to be in the right mood for the repetition. I still have a hard time deciding what rating to settle on.

I agree. I like the songs on here. Sometimes I want to jump into a song without 20 minutes of build up though.

It's hard to find a good time to listen to it all, but other than few parts on a couple of the tracks I wouldn't really want it to be any shorter.

My Father better than this? Nah son, that album missed it's potential, even M. Gira states so. But it's still a great record though.

Also this is a great place to start with Swans. The repetitious plodding/droning is far from alien for the band, so for people getting into them, they should not try to avoid it. In fact, it's at its worst on Public Castration is a Good Idea, which is still a positively pummelling live album.

"My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky" seemed like a warm up to me.

I know Swans too and there are a handful of Swans releases that outshadow My Father.

IDK I've always liked Swans best at their most accessible. I always thought Soundtracks was annoyingly self indulgent and full of filler and while I think this is better it suffers from the same problems.

At this point their weirdness is predictable in its own way - I much prefer an album like the Great Annihilator where they subvert more familiar sounds. A lot more interesting and effective than what they do here or on Soundtracks.

Filth, TGA, and My Father are probably my favorite Swans when it gets down to it.

I've given Soundtracks a lot of chances over the years but its never really grown on me. Definitely one of my least favorite

Swans records. That said, the worst of Swans is still pretty good.

It's more likely to grow on you if you enjoy ambient/soundscape stuff.
