I agree with Alex for once about aesthetic. HOLY SHIT. HI5 dude. I seriously hate something getting shit just because it doesn't fit in a little box

It's not like the album still isn't dark as hell. It just isn't 100% tritone, buzz, and minor keys.

genre tags aside the way the moods clash between the drums, guitars, and vocals is a bit perplexing for me it's like we have the riffs going around doing their whole upbeat vibe while the drums are crashing away and sounding great while the vocalist is just sort of there screaming over everything as if he really doesn't know which of the instruments to complement or accent

sunbather is at least as indebted to screamo and shoegaze as black metal.

really? i feel like there's no contrast whatsoever. everything fits perfectly to my ears in both composition and production.

i gotta spin this album again but i feel like they've ditched a lot of heaviness and that might be contributing to why i'm not really enamored with sunbather

i believe that they ditched much of the depressive sound of this and the demo, but sunbather is also more aggressive than they've ever sounded before. more exciting.

Sunbather is an ambitious mix of shoegaze, screamo, and black metal, with none of the three done convincingly.

Polarizing? Clearly, Kyle and I like this record. Just not the new one.

right, but opinions don't have to be split along the same lines each time to be polarizing. i suppose i should have said that the new record is polarizing just like this one.

"A lot of my favorite black metal songs I find to be very optimistic even if that wasn't their intent. Like I find Tortured By Solitude by Coldworld and Towards the Depths by Woods of Desolation to be whole heartedly uplifting listening experiences."

i know what you mean, especially that WoD song. a lot of depressing music feels weirdly uplifting to me but it's difficult to describe to people who aren't depressed all the time like me lol.

Make that three! It's alright I guess but fuck, getting tired of the blackgaze trend that most of you (minus redsky) are all just hoping on board with. Sunbather is like the culmination of that awful trend.
