Only a Brit would look at a real American city that also has issues with homelessness and go “that city is in dire need of gentrification” LMAO

"aside from chicago, philly is prob the best combination of (relative) affordability and walkability/fun things to do/big city vibes in the US, depending on what ur tryna do its def not a bad choice"

hmm i've spent various weekends in philly over the last 12 months to attend various shows and can't say i've enjoyed it too too much. don't know anything about affordability (i assume its cheaper than most major east coast cities) but idk everything feels a little too spaced out to me while at the same not having as good a metro system as say dc to make up for it. easily feels like the most decrepit city on the east coast i've been to too and that includes baltimore

prefer the more smaller/condensed/homely vibe of pittsburgh to philly even (and no not because i'm a steelers fan)

@alex yea i mostly just meant out of the small handful of attractive/very large cities in the us like nyc, la, boston, chicago, sf, philly, bmore, miami. im surprised a city can be more decrepit than baltimore lmao

pittsburgh is def cool

"im surprised a city can be more decrepit than baltimore lmao"

i guess i should clarify and say "decrepit looking". baltimore is def more unsafe and shitty feeling but also has places like the harbor that are about as pretty as anywhere i've been on the east coast... where as philly is def more consistently downtrodden looking but prob safer/better vibes overall

i keep clarifying east coast because i've never been anywhere west of ohio lmao

Philly is one of the most affordable major cities to live in the country, and if you know where to look, it’s overflowing with real culture. Good food, good music (incredible underground scenes for punk, techno), good people. It’s definitely a little spaced out but I mean, so is LA? Most cities in this country are literally failing due to overpopulation and total mismanagement anyway. If you’re just looking for a bar scene with a dense urban center or something, Philly is not the place for you, but if you like to dig in somewhere and get to know its community, it’s the spot, trust.

I'm vibing with everything you said, norma. The underground music scene is one of my main inspirations for going.

def has a good music scene and i'll take your word on affordability. good food... yes but i would def clarify its more so street/market type stuff. coming from dc i'm used to restaurants everywhere and philly is like the polar opposite

"It’s definitely a little spaced out but I mean, so is LA?"

for an east coast city it is very spaced out but for the states in general i'd estimate its pretty average?? yall could speak to the latter much better than i can. genuinely asking

Adding to the Philly love it was super fun to visit. Going back there next month to hang with some friends, can’t wait to see more of it.

You also gotta take into context the fact that the UK and Europe are much more compact in general than the US. Like, you can drive from London to Paris in like 6 hours and you can't even drive across Texas that fast lol

The congestion of the UK is ridiculous. The population in my lifetime has gone up by 20 million in an area a third the size of Texas and that’s including the outer Hebrides!

Yet people still want greater expansion, more housing, more utilities in towns, villages and hamlets that have remained virtually the same for hundreds of years and which have had the community soul and infrastructure ripped apart.

Complete madness.
