Weird you guys had this convo, because I was just jamming this and thinking how heavy the guitar tone is, which makes for an an interesting contrast with the more delicate moments this undoubtedly excels at.
Proto something-or-other, I’d probably need to be well-versed in music history to know more, but it certainly feels somewhat revolutionary... Although isn’t that almost standard with these guys?

Standard for Fripp and co
"how heavy the guitar tone is"
It's heavy for sure.

i mean its pretty obvious that king crimson's 1974 album red was very influential on the genre of heavy metal, most notably on black sabbath's first release black sabbath from 1970
if you cant see that then im afraid you might be too stupid for this kind of music

Notice how I didn’t actually use the phrase ‘heavy metal’ and would like to distance myself from that line of thinking.

The fact that this was released later than 'Black sabbath' doesn't eliminate the possibility that it influenced Heavy Metal. Not that I think it did.

No park, it can never not be about me. I’m that important.
Seriously though, I was just making sure. And of course Ghandi is right, they could’ve theoretically been an influence, even though in this instance they probably weren’t. You don’t have to be first in line to have an impact.

@Ghandhi bro
I think we've already discussed a couple of times on how a broader or narrower interpretation of a genre's "definition" is what marks the differences in opinion in cases like this
|
| |
"broader or narrower interpretation of a genre's "definition"
Which implies that there is a correct interpretation. (usually consensus)
Maybe you can say Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer are metal in the broader sense. But Crimson? I doubt that, even when talking about individual songs. (21st century schizoid man is the most discussed one)

"Which implies that there is a correct interpretation. (usually consensus)"
Actually it doesn't necessarily mean that m8. While there's certainly a consensus in most cases it also implies that said "concept" has different accepted interpretations
And yeah I agree I wouldn't call King Crimson a heavy metal band, I apologize if that's what my comment looked like. What I meant was that this album had a metal style to it
|
| |
""concept" has different accepted interpretations"
You are making it acceptable by framing it in a different way.
A "broader" interpretation of punk rock could include TVU. But the velvet underground are not punk rock.

Certainly there's stuff which hardly accepts more than one interpretation. I don't think you'll find many different ideas of what a "pencil" is (to think of a mundane example)
However, music genres are certainly more abstract topics. It's like when people argue in the car world that a vehicle can be a "coupe" even if it has four doors.
It's how it works in a legal case as well. The two opposing parts in a case can base their strategy on totally different, yet accepted, definitions of the same concept made by different branches of legal doctrine.
So again, I certainly don't think calling King Crimson a metal band is something that could be discussed that much, but calling Red a proto-metal album is a debate I can certainly see happening
|
| |
"but calling Red a proto-metal album is a debate I can certainly see happening"
Sure, because it's heavy rock music. Schizoid Man is worthy of a mention in the history of metal and the title track on Red is as close to metal as they came.

| |
parts of Larks Tongue Part I are fairly "metal-y", at least every bit as 'Red' imo.
