Hindsight is 20/20. Also read somewhere that When a Blind Man Cries is Gillan's favorite DP song. Maybe that explains the song's exclusion from the album haha.

For sure. Whenever I am in doubt of what to jam, I choose this one or Rainbow - Rising.

"Maybe that explains the song's exclusion from the album haha"
ahahaha golden comment XD
i always thought the exclusion was mainly because the song is quite different in nature with the rest of the catalogue and maybe the band decided it didn't "blend" so well

"or maybe's it's just that Blackmore's a douchebag"
There's a lot more to that than just Blackmore's erratic behavior.
I can elaborate on that if you want but it's a long discussion...

"The Lord solo is pure magic"
There were times when Lord owned Blackmore, totally outshining him. On lives and on tape. He was THAT good of a musician. And that's why these guys thrived, they were constantly trying to top one another.

Man rhythm section always gets forgotten in DP, especially Ian Paice was such an incredible musician, with his crazy inventive fills and his beautiful organic sound. Plus, DP's speed and quasi-thrash tempo's on some tracks which were pretty unique at the time are highly attributable to his technical drumming. Props to Roger Glover's bass lines as well

Ian Paice and Roger Glover never were underrated, they were/are an essencial piece for DP sound.
And yeah, Highway Star can be considerer proto-speed metal.
One of the greatest songs of the last century.

my late uncle left me a 1st edition copy of this. pretty good stuff
really laid the road for modern metal. the compositions themselves are much simpler but at the same time i feel they understood the purpose of music on a much deeper, direct level

The band in general seems to love the song
It was just Blackmore's that hated it. Which is why it wasn't played when he was in the band
