This is often regarded as their best of the Tomi Joutsen era Amorphis, and they've had a very consistent sound since he took over after Pasi.

Pasi era Amorphis is the rabbit hole. The first couple albums were doom laden melodic death metal to some degree. Their third album Elegy was a more progressive take on their sound, and they slowly started shifting more and more prog rock over the next few albums until the newer material became almost unrecognizable from their original sound.

That being said I would absolutely recommend Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Elegy from the Pasi era.

Whoa there. Pasi wasn't on the first two Amorphis albums. Tomi Koivusaari performed vocals on those. Pasi joined on Elegy and left after Far From The Sun.

This is actually quite different & not necessarily in a good way, preferred the atmosphere on Thousand Lakes & the riffs actually had some crunch to them. I find this overly melodic, a little cheesy & the growls may as well not exist, because they're doing absolutely nothing to cut through all the fluff.

I'll try again but not impressed with their 'sound' on this one, hopefully something grabs me composition wise on the next listen.

This is growing on me a little now I've accepted it for what it is, there are some nice moments amongst the slower stuff especially. Opening track is catchy.
