"I recently quit the band. I feel I have lost the passion for playing music, and Dark Tranquillity deserves to have members that are 100% committed to the art"

This is fair tbh. The best he could do for himself, the band and fans

there goes the backbone of the band. isn't he the main songwriter since the beginning?

Nope, he didn't join until just before Haven. But I'd be willing to bet he had a big influence on their Damage Done - Fiction era sound.

I hope he finds a new project and DF finds a good new bassist

He's been one of the prominent songwriters along with Sundin, and his presence started to increase heavily ever since he switched from the bass to the guitar. This sucks hard. But they had been in a repetitive cycle of releasing an album ever 2-3 years for over 20 years, so I guess that took its toll

Just spun this again after a long while. How is the average for this only a 4?

It's definitely somewhere between a 4.0 and a 4.5. Personally of the three: Damage Done > Character > Fiction. Damage Done blew my mind when it came out because there was such a slump in the melodeath scene at the time, and it just blew everything else out of the water, which is part of the reason I hold in in such high regard. I also feel like Character and Fiction were just rehashing the sound of Damage Done, but I can understand the argument that they improved that sound on each sequential album.

I have hard times 4.5ing any melodeath albums, that's why it is a 4 for me. If I could I would give it a 4.2

I think Fiction is best because it combined the aggression and intensity of Character, and the top songwriting and inventiveness of Damage Done.

That's how it hits me anyway, the perfect version of the sound they went for on those two albums but didn't quite nail till this one.
