everyone knows about them.
"More appeal than a Darkthrone or Emperor? I'm not sure about that."
do mainstream people listen to those bands? No, but they do listen to post-hardcore and emo stuff, which are much closer to this than any norsecore band. This has broad indie appeal, which is objectively a bigger market than bm has ever had. There are loads of screamo/emo bands that also use post-rock, and jumping from there to deafheaven isn't that big a leap.

Bring Me The Horizon is the natural progression to Sunbather.

zaru do you think Darkthrone and emperor are norsecore
agreed with the rest of your post though, it's objectively true and obvious

how mainstream are any of these genres really at this point
less niche than black metal? perhaps

I met a man who listened to this and no other black metal leading me to the conclusion: less niche

It’s still just as inaccessible for someone who isn’t open to experimental music though

“ So, I'll offer this warning and set of instructions; if you are not open-minded before you listen to this album, open your mind. If you don't listen to the alternative sound and you've never been into the alternative sound and have not been open to trying different things; open your mind before you listen to this album.”

Nail. On. Head.
Regardless this ain't no dick waving contest, you like what you like. Thinking Deafheaven have broader appeal (quite correctly imo) and also being a naysayer doesn't equate to being elitist. Similarly there's no shame in not being into first-wave BM etc. but digging these guys.

what makes you say that

Norsecore is just bm that rips that trve 2nd wave sound so first-ish wave norsecore would be the OG bands just like how Bulldozer were also retroactively considered 1st wave bm. Maybe I shoulda said proto-norsecore idk split hairs who cares

as far as i know, norsecore is an often misattributed and disparaging descriptor for bands that just blast and trem mindlessly and dont give a shit about atmosphere or composition that much. from what i recall marduk used to be the biggest example thereof. i have of course seen the absolute 69 iq troglodytes on the metal-archives forum try to claim that mayhem and immortal constitute norsecore and were never good so meh

Probably Burzum/Gorgoroth fans.

Oh Gorgoroth is def norsecore. They built the framework for the generic bm sound lol
|
