"Sergio is still a cool dude and did a great job stepping in. I won't be too upset if he is gone though"

Yeah, he's definitely the most replaceable member of the band. But still, he deserves tremendous praise for stepping in for Chi - I think it's very possible Deftones could have called it quits after the accident if it wasn't for Sergio.

It seems like he is gone. On the Deftones reddit there is a screenshot from one of Chino's mxlr sessions, where he posted about this in the chat seemingly replying to somebody there. Here's what he wrote:

"btw Vega didn't quit. that fool was outta pocket. he's gone fh"

Seems like some shit went down and it wasn't a peaceful separation. He was kicked out.

Some rumors going around on the Deftones subreddit that Shavo from SOAD may fill in since both bands have the same management. Would be cool if trve

I had to look it up to see what it meant haha. It could be "fucking hell". Curious what happened considering he called the guy that helped launch the band even further into the stratosphere a "fool". If it weren't for that fool filling in, Deftones wouldn't be where they are right now.

It's official, Sergio says he is no longer with the band:

I wish him the best, seems like a good guy on top of being a damn fine bassist.

Yeah, that instagram video raises more questions than it clears up.

I mean, from his pov it sounded like they basically treated him like shit? Not even an in-person goodbye, just a direct statement from the lawyers?

Confusing situation.

lol, sounds like what happened when Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater. He had to talk to DT's lawyers instead of being able to talk directly with the band

Got given the Newsted treatment 100%. Hired gun to replace beloved former member, first album was largely absent from any meaningful contribution. Publicly treated as full member but behind closed doors was never treated the same as the other members and when he wanted improved status he was kicked out. From the sounds of things he was only paid for studio work and touring and got no cut of merch sales or any other income the band got, so when Covid ruled out a big part of that income he needed better terms and they refused it. Makes it a bit low for Chino to call him broke when THEY'RE THE REASON HE WAS.
