but diverse yet cohesive songwriting is the key to an entertaining album imo

as I said, there's funk, jazz and soul here and that's mainly it. Of course you could divide those further into sub-genres if you wanted to but those are mainly it and traditionally they work together really well, especially in hip hop.I'd say Paul's Boutique is just as diverse genre wise as this is for example.

paul's boutique has like a zillion genres too bro. "funk" is almost as broad as "music"

I like to keep it simple. This album is jazz, funk and soul influenced to me. It sounds great and works in the context of the album. No need to go full try hard and point out each potential style of funk or jazz here. Hip hop, traditionally, has always borrowed from many different genres. This is't that special when it comes to this and it doesn't need to be.

there's like an entirely different set of instruments on every song, sometimes changing multiple times in one song

He already conceded that Paul's Boutique is just as diverse

I think kendrick was trying to craft a "Black Art/Artist Hall of Fame" with this record.

"Last LP I tried to lift the black artist..."

Nah I agree with Colton here, like yeah those genres aren’t total strangers to hip hop but to hear them all infused and utilized to the extent they are here, it’s definitely refreshing and a step above normal. I mean, For Free is practically a straight up freestyle jazz song but with fast chaotic rapping over it. That’s not a hip hop song with some jazz, it’s the other way around.

I’m intrigued by this. If my curiosity fails spectacularly, then at least I can potentially contribute to that stupendously awful sound-off page.
