Like how do you create an album with such clever themes and subject matter, and then execute it with such a perfect balance between those themes and the actual arrangements and instrumentation, while having so much variety across different genres and styles but still feeling completely cohesive

not to mention his album before this was GKMC, which was much different stylistically, and this album had next to no promotion going into its release. this shit came out of fkin nowhere.

It’s rare for an album to be able to draw from so many different styles while still maintaining a sense of cohesion both musically and thematically you dense Megamind lookin baldy bitch

I wouldn't call it "rare" as that's like in a nutshell how you make a classic album. But it's certainly hard to pull off.

what are the "many musical styles" here though?

It's pretty much jazz, funk and soul inspired which always worked good together in hip hop

because those styles manifest in many different ways. Like For Free and The Blacker The Berry's outro are two very different styles of jazz. King Kunta and i are very different styles of funk

I guess it just doesn't strike me as that special. It's really well done here but hip hop has always drawn inspiration from those types of genres

idk I think there's pretty clearly a greater diversity of sounds here than your typical rap album, or album in general for that matter

there's also the fact that Kendrick's control of his voice and cadence on the mic is insane, even if he had shit lyrics I would find his vocal style very compelling but then he adds the best lyrics in rap on top of all that too
