Dawn patrol exists. I guess they just didn't want it to be perfect. That would be too much mayebe.

So after about 15 years of not understanding the appeal of Rust in Peace I realised my CD copy is the critically reviled 2004 remaster with re-recorded vocals. Gave the OG a spin and it’s actually more tolerable - though I think I’m way too old to get into Megadeth in any meaningful way now, it was nice to know there wasn’t actually something wrong with my ears.

The only thing really horrific thing about the remaster to me is the weird yoda voice in 5 magicks which makes it unlistenable

I just listened to the original for the first time and it is really crazy to think how much the remaster has degraded it. The drums on original alone, make it 10x better than the remaster.

It's a night and day difference for sure.
I remember his voice specifically on Five Magics sounding like it was echoing down a corridor in the remaster, and in the original its so much more grounded, and angrily fleshed into the music. You can hear him spitting as he sings "bestow upon me..." into the mic. It's like the remaster traded that passionate anger to be more clearly enunciated, but then you have that hint of an echo.

I guess I'm gonna continue sitting at my lonely table of one, as one of the few people who prefers the remaster. The vocals aren't as good, sure, but the rhythm section is worth the updated version alone... I never thought the bass and drums had enough power or drive in the original album tbh. They're so beefed up in the remaster, and yet so clear and comprehensible in the mix at the same time

I've only ever owned the remaster. Heard the original but the sound doesn't bother me either way, it's the music that's important.

Every time I see my score for this, I always retrospectively feel like I may have overrated it. Then I re-listen and am afraid that I'm underrating it. Rips, forever and always.

It's a front-loaded album, IMO, but even the weaker songs are awesome. It's a classic of the genre, and Holy Wars is one of the best thrash songs ever.
