"Dude, this is sput, everyone spreads disease. Everyone got their 1s and 5s. "
What's the point of rating stuff you don't listen to, though ?
(and by stuff, i mean genres)

I rate absolutely everything these days, as long as I can actually get through the entire album at least once, 99% of things I spin a minimum of twice though, just to be fair. Music can often surprise you, just because a genre isn't necessarily your preferred option, doesn't mean you definitely won't like it. I agree that listening to stuff you're convinced will suck is generally a pointless process, and I wouldn't waste my time in doing that.

You don't. You see a hyped album, you check it out, right? I think all albums with averages over 4 warrant your attention. Unless you're strictly a metalhead or a hip pop person. In which case just stick to whatever floats your boat.
Believe it or not, I have discovered a few albums way out of my comfort zone and thoroughly enjoyed them thanks to their ratings. Like Hurry Up, We're Dreaming or The Lonesome Crowded West.

If I think I will dig something, I will listen.
If it is shite, I will rate accordingly but generally speaking I tend to rate albums positively as I'm quite comfortable knowing if I will like something or not.

And naturally, there's bound to be stuff you'll hate too - like Jeff Rosenstock or Bring Me The Horizon or The Hotelier, in my instance.

I fucking hate BMTH, so fair play on guessing that.

My list of things to purposefully stay away from is very short, it does exist, but if an album gets enough hype I'll end up checking it anyway. You can't listen to EVERYTHING, so naturally there has to be at least some form of filtration process.

I tend to stick to my good ol' roster of skramz, black/post metal, and sludge, but I am always happy to check out the cream of the crop of the other genres/subgenres.

Agreed.
Over the years my opinions on certain albums that have either liked/loved/hated have changed so I have changed some ratings here and there accordingly.
For example, Atreyu's The Curse has become a bit of a guilty pleasure - I used to dislike it a fair bit but now I do enjoy it.

Yeah but if you're unfamiliar with a particular style, how do you know the album isn't actually a masterpiece in its own genre ? Even if you dislike it ?
Ratings are here to help people discover more music...and they might dismiss stuff after people that have no clue about the particular genre rated it a 1.0 and made the average drop. For albums like Terminal Redux, it won't matter much because there are loads of ratings...but for obscure bands, that's a shame because you might hurt their chances to gain more fans and have more sales.
And it goes the other way around as well...you might fall in love with something when discovering a genre and then as you know it better, find out it wasn't that good (and then change the rating accordingly).
But if you just rate 1 album in a particular genre you're not familiar with and don't try it more, then it's just a useless rating...worse, it's a skewing rating.

If it wasn't for sput, I probably would have never developed a love for certain genres such as post metal, sludge and skramz.
I've been here for fourteen years and the site has become quite a major part of my life.

I'm admittedly kinder on stuff that's outside of my comfort zone, I still like to rate it because I'm selfish and it's for my own reference more than anything, but I won't just slap a 1/5 on some afro-funk/Bulgarian-surf fusion, even if it passes me by completely. Yes I made that up, no idea if the combo is actually a thing.

Why would you change your rating though? If you really liked an electronic album and then electronic fans scoffed at you for that, would you seriously consider changing your rating? I wouldn't. I always disregard people's individual ratings. Go for the general average. Problem is, sput's been pretty much dead for the past five or so years, meaning it's harder to actually find new music here.
Reddit, on the other, is pretty good, especially if you're looking for genre overviews.

I wanna hear everything, from burmese pop to digital cumbia. Hearing new sound that I've never heard before, the sonic exploration of it - that's what makes music exciting.

Because your appreciation of it changed ? I didn't mean that you found out OTHERS didn't like it as much...i meant yourself.
Also, i've discovered a lot of new stuff here on sputnik recently...and there's quite a bunch of older bands i still haven't listened to as well.
