I didn't get into Deftones until after high school, after I'd discovered all or most of the music it apparently "gateways" people to, but it did make me a bit more open to stuff like Messhuggah and Boris and other stuff that was a bit more heavy, droney, and/or screamy

one of the worst deftones albums tbh
chino brings forth some of the most repetitive run of the mill hooks of his career, stephs 8 string tone sounds like digital mud compared to the sound on SNW, and sergio's bass playing is a noticeable step down from chi's. the only track that truly hits hard & feels like a breath of fresh air for me is "Royal", everything else is dragged down by the hooks/production, or has already been done better on previous albums.
overall I feel like they were going through the motions here, and KNY ended up being what this should have been
